After a two year respite, one of Seattle’s most colorful traditions returns in all its whimsy. The Fremont Solstice Parade is back — but without a Wallingford finish in Gas Works Park this year.

Lumen Bioscience has expanded into the space formerly occupied by the Essential Bakery on the northeast corner of 34^th and Woodlawn just east of the transfer station. Lumen’s main office is just kitty corner across the street at 1441 N 34^th St. The Essential Baking Company closed down their Wallingford cafe back in 2020, and the space has sat empty ever since.

I tried repeatedly to contact them to find out what they intend to use the new space for, but I got no replies. The old Essential Baking space seems considerably smaller than the space Lumen currently …

Back in March, Wallyhood published an article about Mahamed Mohamud, a FamilyWorks and Wallingford Boys & Girls Club volunteer who tragically drowned last summer in Green Lake (Seattle Times article, Kiro 7 article).  Earlier this year, Mahamed’s mother, who still is an employee at FamilyWorks, worked with Lincoln High School staff, the Alliance for Education, and a group of community members to establish a scholarship in Mahamed’s name for graduating seniors at Lincoln.  Kirby Lochner, Communications Coordinator at FamilyWorks, passed this description to us:

This is purely a coincidence, I think.  But almost immediately after one of Wallyhood’s loose cannon editors included a snarky joke about the Route 44 bus line in an article that was mostly unrelated to it, we heard from Darrell Bulmer, communications/outreach lead for the city’s Route 44 upgrade project.  For the record:  Darrell lives in the neighborhood AND rides the 44 bus.
