Wallyhood heard from Talia, who is a research analyst at Seattle University and works with the Micro-Community Policing Plans (MCPP) team for SPD. The goal of that research is to review the annual Seattle Public Safety Survey results and provide opportunity for those who live and/or work in Seattle to discuss real time community safety concerns and build relationships with police at the precinct and micro- community (neighborhood) level. Talia asked that we share information about the survey with the Wallingford community.  Here’s the scoop:

On a weekend in mid-September,  A group of Wallingford neighbors came together to repaint the street mural of ‘Bubbles the Turtle’. I recently walked by the intersection of North 41st and Interlaken Avenue North, one block west of Hamilton Middle School, and was struck by the size of this art piece, the bold colors of green, red, and blue, and the swirling shapes.

My first thought was that it had an almost psychedelic feel to it. No, I didn’t go into an alternate state of consciousness, but I was a little puzzled because I couldn’t quite make out the shape …

In a newsletter sent out last week to subscribers, wallyhood among them, Dustin Ronspies, owner and head chef at Art of the Table which has been a neighborhood mainstay for over 17 years, said that he is closing his restaurant for good come late November. He pointedly said he would not be looking to open a new place, and implied that he and his family would be moving out of the area. No specific reason was cited for the closure other than the cumulative toll of 17 years of “long days and longer nights,” and a desire to move on.…

A piece of Wallingford history is going up for sale; only this time it’s not a sad loss for our community.  Bedrooms & More, a Wallingford stalwart, has just listed their original building for sale.

Fortunately, they aren’t going anywhere. They will continue to thrive in their fancy new building on the corner of 4th and 45th (designed in the offices of Wallingford Architect Stuart Silk).

After the completion of the 5-story building, they tried using their original location as a seating store, only to find that customers shopping in their new space often didn’t realize they sold living room …

There’s an intersection in the south part of our neighborhood that’s always been bad for users of the Burke Gilman Trail and drivers trying to cross it. I don’t think it’s actually terribly dangerous — although the intersection has some risks for trail users – but it’s been a source of many moments of frustration and angst over the years. And now, with an increase in the number of cars in that area, the problem seems to be getting worse.
