This is old news, but still worth a mention: you may have noticed that that Bettie Page mural on the side of a house facing I-5 just across from Wallingford was smeared with gray paint back in June. The vandals tagged it with the statement “Stop exploiting women’s bodies. – some feminists.”

Jessica Baxter (pictured), who lives there with her partner (and one of the artists behind the mural) Chris Brugos, replaced their words with the statement “Autonomous sexuality is empowerment. Telling a woman to cover up is oppression.”

A little while back, I saw someone asking about the “baby exploding & baby getting impaled with rebar sculptures” by 40th and Interlake Ave N on the Wallingford / Fremont Facebook group.

The whole thing sounded a bit more like the premise of a series of jokes we used to tell in elementary school, but nevertheless piqued my curiosity. With a bit of sleuthing*, I discovered it was produced by the wife and husband team of Missy Douglas and Kim Rask, who are jointly the uckiood studio.

I heard a strange story from a neighbor at our block party: she said she was looking out her window earlier this week and saw a mother with four kids, all under the age of 10, stop in front of her plum tree. The mother stopped and gestured and the kids scurried up the tree and proceeded to harvest it, not bare, but heavily. Their job done, they descended and moved on. Obviously, they didn’t ask.
