Strolling down to Dunn Lumber on Sunday morning, I was shocked to see a charred facade where our neighbor’s house at 4019 4th Ave NE had stood unscathed just days ago. It was especially disturbing because I know that it was a duplex with newborn twins living on the second floor.

Back in March, readers took me to task for calling the police when I caught a young man stealing a basketball off my front porch (Porch Thief Caught).

Today, frequent Wallyhood commenter Marie of Romania brought to my attention that this young man, Walter Burton, was killed by a drunk driver Monday morning while he slept in his tent by the I-5 entrance ramp off 50th NE Street.

According to King 5 news:

Burton was struck by a driver during the Monday morning commute at the Northeast 50th Street ramp from northbound I-5.

The community group I work with, Friends of North Lake Union, is hosting community meetings on Tuesday September 13th and Tuesday Sept 27th at Miir Flagship store (3400 Stone Way N) at 6:45 pm. We need the community’s input on a plan to improve a piece of shoreline land called Waterway 22 (between Gas Works and Stone Way). This is old news, but still worth a mention: you may have noticed that that Bettie Page mural on the side of a house facing I-5 just across from Wallingford was smeared with gray paint back in June. The vandals tagged it with the statement “Stop exploiting women’s bodies. – some feminists.”

Jessica Baxter (pictured), who lives there with her partner (and one of the artists behind the mural) Chris Brugos, replaced their words with the statement “Autonomous sexuality is empowerment. Telling a woman to cover up is oppression.”
