ANOTHER BREAK IN —  MORE DAMAGE

While out for a morning walk a few minutes ago, I passed by the 45th Stop N Shop & Poke Bar  that we spotlighted in a Wallyhood post  just 10 days ago. My heart sank when I saw two police officers mid-response and felt glass crunching beneath my feet. I spoke briefly to the Stop N Shop owners, who were busy cleaning up damage and making phone calls. Poke, Please!

My Saturday stroll provided a friendly reminder that we have a poke paradise hidden in an unassuming convenience store right here in Wallingford. Located on 45th and Sunnyside, Stop N Shop Poke Bar is not a truly hidden gem. It boasts 739 Yelp reviews and was mentioned on Anthony Bourdain’s CNN show, Parts Unknown. Yet the Poke bar is still easy to miss with the quiet storefront and low-key vibe. During a filming of the show, Bourdain expressed his fondness for Seattle, wandering around Wallingford and remarking that Seattle is “excellent for serial killers”.  However hospitable the environment, …

Tea tastings this Sunday at 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm Masks and vaccination proof are required, and attendees will be able to social distance

In support of the Asian community in Seattle which has helped to make Young Tea possible, the proceeds of these two tastings will be donated to Kin On, a non-profit that helps Asian elders by providing healthcare solutions.

Wallingford resident and former business owner of Open Books (from 1987-2016), J.W. Marshall wrote to Wallyhood telling us that:

“I happened to be walking by the Guild a little after 1 PM today and saw this happening and took these pictures with my phone. I intended to film it but failed. I don’t know if this is just the end of that lovely, iconic sign or the end of the theater(s) altogether. I’ve owned a home and/or business in W’hood since the late 1970’s and this is another push of a dagger into an agéd heart”.

The sadness our neighborhood feels today over the recent destruction of the iconic Guild sign conjures in me (by contrast), the celebration I felt when the abandoned theater was so cheerfully and cleverly painted last spring.

Several months ago, I had the chance to talk with Paul Nunn, Project Lead at Urban ArtWorks and CreaturePanic, the artist who transformed the rundown site of the former Guild Theater into a PNW fantasy, using bright colors, provoking imagery and cheerful, squiggly Beso Bears.
