The budget challenges facing Seattle Public Schools are widely recognized, but here in Wallingford, the implications hit particularly close to home — for my family and for many others at John Stanford School, which is not scheduled for closure, but still rumored to be considered for significant change. Students have been bracing for impact as the district initially proposed, then reversed, plans to close 21 schools, ultimately narrowing it down to a potential four “under-enrolled schools” (and leaving the wildly underfunded budget issues still largely unsolved). The plan is a revised version of the earlier proposal, which was canceled after …
Gunshots Reported on Ashworth Ave N between 41st and 42nd
Wallingford neighbors concluded Veterans Day weekend with an unsettling experience on Ashworth Avenue North, between 41st and 42nd streets. People in the neighborhood reported that round 8:15 PM, a black SUV drove by and fired 4-6 rounds of gun fire into the air. This left many with the familiar hope that it was just fireworks, but the arrival of police officers confirmed otherwise – they found shell casings on the ground.
Thankfully, no one was hurt, but it was a frightening experience for all, including children who were extremely close to the incident. The reason for this action and location …
Spooktacular Events in Wallingford This Weekend 🎃👻
When we first moved to Wallingford, the previous homeowners warned us to stock up on LOTS of candy—and they weren’t kidding! Every year, around 100 costumed kiddos visit our house. If you want to partake, this is your friendly reminder to get some candy before the shelves at QFC and CVS are bare. As a parent of young kids who have their costumes planned for the next three years, I can’t get enough of the Halloween spirit.
Inspired by Gary’s story about our neighborhood haunted house, I wanted to share a couple more events to help you celebrate this spooky …
To Turf or Not to Turf: Wallingford Playfield
If you’re involved with Seattle Public Schools in any capacity, it feels nearly impossible to think about anything other than the looming list of elementary school closures. Here in Wallingford, parents (myself included) are buzzing with questions about the fate of Dual Language Immersion programs at John Stanford International School (JSIS) and McDonald Elementary.
But another topic is stirring up a lot of opinions: the proposal to install synthetic turf at Wallingford Playfield.
If you’ve spent any time in neighborhood Facebook groups lately, you’ve probably seen the debate. On one side, parents are excited about the idea of turf, thrilled …

My First Psychic Reading with Tina the Good Witch
As a proud Minnesotan, I consider neighborliness a core value—right up there with casserole creation. Yet, despite my deep dedication to being the kind of person who waves at neighbors from the porch like it’s an Olympic sport, I realized that I had been living down the street from a new neighbor for an entire year without stopping by. I know, it’s scandalous. But, no time for guilt! This revelation jolted me into action—spoiler alert, I did not bring a hotdish.
My new neighbor? Tina, proprietor of a Psychic Boutique who offers a range of services …
