Its not very often that something new comes to a neighborhood and you immediately know it will stand the test of the time and become an iconic part of the streetscape. Last summer the Wallingford Boys & Girls Club gave us that when they constructed a community courtyard and commissioned Seattle glass artist Rodman Miller and metal artist Mimi Riley to build a fence along 45th St. Mimi, came up with the concept of ‘storybook stream side”. Silent Art Auction Benefit for Haiti
This coming Wednesday Lucid Jazz Club in the U-dist is hosting a silent art auction to benefit relief efforts in Haiti. The owner of Lucid, David Pierre-Louis, after traveling to Haiti to help his family, is spearheading a grassroots relief effort based right here in our backyard. They are currently raising funds and also looking for several hundred tents. This is a perfect opportunity to make a difference in a direct way. Get behind this neighbor of ours and lets help the thousands and thousands of struggling Haitians.

Conclusion of Is That Jazz? Festival
The Avant-Jazz Festival at the Chapel Performance Space wrapped up this past weekend with four more powerful performances.
The second weekend began with Vertigo led by Seattle Clarinetist Jesse Canterbury. It was an ethereal almost dream like set that carried the listener on a journey into the stars. Canterbury was joined by Tom Baker on guitar, Joanne DeMars on Cello, and Chris Stover on Trombone. The quartet was strongly attuned to each other which carried them to a higher more intense level of performance.

Wallingford is Re-Lit
The iconic sign is back in action. Alan Johnson, store manager, had the honor of ‘flipping the switch’. People lined the sidewalk and parking lot all around snapping photos. The moment was just shy of perfection with the the blue outline of the ‘W’ not lighting. However, some quick action by the electrical contractor on site got it fired up within minutes to light up Wallingford center.

A dozen kids and a pile of electronics took over the Great Hall at the Fremont Abby this past Saturday for a Field Recording Workshop. The workshop was hosted by the Fremont Abby and run by Wallingford’s Hollow Earth Radio.
Five staff members from Hollow Earth started by helping the kids, ages 8-13, to discover and understand what field recording is and why it is important. For those of you over the age of 13 who don’t know what field recording is, I’ll tell you what I learned.

This past weekend held the first performances of the Is That Jazz? Festival at The Good Shepherd Center. The festival continues this weekend with performances by Jesse Canterbury’s Vertigo and Bad Luck on Friday and the Tom Baker Quartet and Cuong Vu Trio on Saturday.
