This year, B.F. Day’s boundaries reach further into Wallingford, adding many new families from the neighborhood. Here are some events happening next week to introduce new families to the school. From B.F. Day’s new principal, Katie Pearl:

New Family Welcome Potluck (Aug. 30th 5:30-7:00 p.m.) – You should receive a flyer in the mail with the details of this event if your child is new to our school. Come and meet B.F. Day families, teachers and the principal for an informal program and tour. Main dishes and drinks provided. Please bring items by child’s last name.

Wallingford’s Truly Helpful Collective

Wallyhood welcomes our newest sponsor, Wallingford’s Truly Helpful Collective (WTHC), located at 4423 Corliss Avenue North, between N. 44th and 45th streets. The marijuana dispensary offers medication in many different forms from edibles, drinks, topicals, and the usual flowers, to concentrates and safe extracts, and all of WTHC’s medication is grown locally by patients. In order for WTHC to serve someone, they must present their original, tamper-proof recommendation from a valid Washington State physician, and a valid Washington State ID.

S.O.S. (Save Our Sandbox)

By now, you’ve probably heard the story about Tangletown resident, Paulo Nunes-Ueno, who installed a sandbox for his kids on the planting strip in front of his home, and was warned by the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) to move or it face a daily fine of $500. Here’s the original story that ran in the Seattle Times on August 3.

‘Babalu’ building up for sale

It almost seems ludicrous for me to call it the “Babalu” building since it’s been a Wallingford landmark since 1926; but hey, it made for a snappy headline.

The building I’m referring to, of course, is the one in brick, located on the corner of N. 45th Street at Wallingford Avenue North, which is up for sale for a mere $5,500,000. Here’s the listing:

RIP, Doggy Style

For some, this may be old news, and I mean, really old news. But for me, well, I’m embarrassed to say I really didn’t notice that the Doggy Style East Coast Hot Dog stand was closed for good until two weeks ago, when I saw that the sign had been completely peeled off of the plywood on top of the space.

So you can imagine my surprise when I called Big Wheel Auto Parts, only to find out that Doggy Style had been closed since January.

Reminder: The Goonies at Gasworks

Don’t forget that this Sunday evening (8/19), The World is Fun (TWIF) is hosting a fun evening at Gasworks Park, including a screening of The Goonies. The fun starts at 6:30pm, and the film begins at sunset.

The Goonies is a great kid-friendly flick from 1985, written by Steven Speilberg and directed by Richard Donner, and features the young Sean Astin (who later became a Hobbit) and Josh Brolin (who went on to scare us with his uncanny George W. likeness). Warm temps remind us to be watchful neighbors

Summer, glorious summer, what took you so long? While many of us enjoy our one and only week of basking in the warmth, it’s also a good idea to check-in with our neighbors and family members who are most at-risk for heat-related illness. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) “People who have difficulty getting around or who have health conditions are particularly susceptible. The elderly and the very young also merit special attention during periods of high heat and humidity.”
