If you have plans to come to the Harvest Fair at Meridian Park on Saturday (9/8), come early and come hungry! The Wallingford Community Senior Center (WCSC) is hosting a Harvest Breakfast, in the basement of The Good Shepherd Center (4649 Sunnyside Avenue North) from 9:00am to 11:30am.

Kathleen Cromp of the WCSC writes, “This year we’re changing it up a bit and will feature a burrito bar – including homemade muffins, homemade salsa!”

Katie over at Present Sense tells us about a beautiful bird photography exhibit called “Wings in My World” by Tom Talbott, opening this Friday night (September 7):

Local photographer Tom Talbott has spent the past year photographing birds from Northern California to the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. To mark the end of this project, you are invited to view a selection of works at Windows Art Gallery during the month of September. Some of the stars of the show are from our very own neighborhood!

Car break-in over the weekend

Wallyhood reader Jack dropped us a quick note about a car break-in that happened on Sunday night:

The window of our car was busted out late last night, and an emergency kit was stolen. The car was parked on Latona Ave. NE just south of the intersection with 44th. Several other cars were nearby but left alone. Our car was therefore targeted, probably because the emergency kit (stored in a very cheap-looking backpack) was visible in the back seat. Living relatively close to Hamilton International Middle School, I often see drivers frantically race their children to school on N. 41st, which is an non-arterial street. And several times when I’ve been out walking the dogs, I’ve almost been plowed over by folks driving southbound on Wallingford and hooking a sharp right onto N. 41st without looking out for pedestrians. It’s enough to drive me crazy, and I often try not to walk the dogs between 7:30 and 8:00am to avoid the frenzy. I’d be curious to hear from other folks, too, who live by neighborhood schools. ‘Greener Skies’ could mean quieter skies for Wallingford

Earlier this month, the Seattle Times reported that the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) project, “Greener Skies Over Seattle“, calls for “significant changes” in flight patterns to airplanes approaching Sea-Tac airport from the northwest and southwest. So, rather than jets flying over North Seattle, they’d be re-routed over Elliott Bay, with a final approach over Harbor Island.

The changes in flight patterns are part of “NextGen,” a larger project by the FAA to reduce the use of fuel and to lower emissions by using “Optimized Profile Descents” (OPDs), which is a fancy way of saying that the pilots could set the …

McDonald International School Grand Opening

After two years of ramping up in its interim site at Lincoln, F.A. McDonald International School has moved into its own, spiffy, newly-remodeled building on N. 54th St. at Latona. The school had been closed for 28 years and was in pretty bad shape until now. But starting on September 5, approximately 293 students will walk through its doors to begin a new school year; 112 of which will be Kindergartners.
