Forget Black Friday or Cyber Monday, and shop this Saturday without leaving Wallingford. The third annual “Small Business Saturday” is happening this Saturday, November 24.

And if you want to save $25 while you shop on Saturday, American Express card members who enroll their cards in the Small Business Saturday program will receive a $25 credit on their statement when they use the enrolled card on a single purchase of $25 or more from a participating small business. Fruit tree steward, neighborhood recycling guru, and overall swell neighbor, Barb Burrill, shared a recent adventure in the Wallingford urban orchard:

A couple of weeks ago while walking home from my son’s school, I noticed a bunch of lime-like fruits lying on the ground and sidewalk beneath a huge tree. Some had split open and looked like what might be black walnuts. I remember finding a funny-looking nut shell when I was a child and learning from my mom that it was a black walnut. I took two samples home and verified that, yep, that’s what they were.

Boy, oh, boy, the fifth grade Japanese language-track students at John Stanford International are lucky ducks. Not only will they have been immersed in Japanese for 6 years by the time they enter sixth grade, but they’ll also have the chance to visit Japan for some real cultural immersion, which, for most of us, is an opportunity of a lifetime!

But, as you can imagine, a big trip like that can be pretty costly, and the kids rely entirely on fundraising to make it happen. So, if you’d like to help out, the students are holding a raffle this weekend …

A new neighborhood healthcare clinic, called ZoomCare, is coming to Wallingford in December, at 4555 Stone Way North (next to Verity Credit Union). The Portland, Oregon-based chain of clinics offers a board-certified clinical team, consisting of physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants providing primary care for illnesses, injuries, and preventative healthcare.

There’s a ZoomCare operating on Capitol Hill and so far, folks have had positive things to say about it on Yelp, primarily that appointment scheduling (even same day) is a piece of cake.

ZoomCare will be open 7 days a week, 362 days a year.…
