Seattle Public Library adds Sunday hours

Thanks to the new voter-approved $122 million Library levy, Seattle Public Library (SPL) has added Sunday hours to every branch, including our little one here in Wallingford. Sunday hours are from 1:00pm – 5:00pm.

Throughout the beginning of 2013, SPL will hold “Sunday Celebrations” at each branch, and Wallingford’s branch will celebrate on Sunday, March 24, from 2:00pm – 3:30 pm with crafts, refreshments, and the chance to participate in the “Check-out Challenge”:

Abacus West Adds Hours for Homeschoolers

Back in September, we wrote about Abacus West, an after school math enrichment program at the Good Shepherd Center. Now, Abacus West is offering math classes during weekday hours to allow homeschoolers to take advantage of the program. Here’s a little bit of info:

One of my regular running routes from Wallingford to Green Lake is along Wallingford Avenue. It’s an easy mile from here to there and the street is, for the most part, pretty quiet with roundabouts aplenty above N. 50th St. Over the years, I’ve seen houses for sale, houses under renovation, and houses painted and repainted. But what I’m most impressed about this stretch of Wallingford is that it’s very neighborly. During the warmer months, it’s not uncommon to see neighbors chatting with one another on the sidewalk.

Urban Pollination Project

Susan Waters is a scientist at the University of Washington, and she’s trying to get the public’s help with citizen science research on bee colony collapse and urban farming. They have just 21 days to raise $1600 to keep the project going for another year, and they currently have a Christmas countdown on their site, with a new entry every day showing how pollinators contribute to Christmas holiday traditions and foods. Ugh, this is such depressing news we received from Kris today. What a way to sour someone’s holiday cheer:

I just found out today that a large package from Lego.com was stolen off of our covered porch at 4 pm on December 11th, 2012. It had been sitting there for one hour and fifteen minutes and was worth about $115.

Christmas light show extravaganza

Boy, I’ll tell ya, Greenlake resident Jeff Rodenburg has a thing about Christmas lights. Since 2001, Jeff has put on a nightly Christmas light show in front of his home that dazzles NE 57th Street throughout the month of December. He’s got a whopping 30,000 lights in all, with 19,000 of them used for a huge Christmas tree. The lights are synchronized to music that you can listen to on your car radio (or portable, if you walk), tuned to 102.1 FM.
