Firefly Tutoring, the brainchild of lower Wallingford resident Paul Schurr, is slated to open on Wednesday, not coincidentally the first day of school for those who attend Seattle Public Schools. Paul, who teaches computer programming at the UW, has joined forces with seasoned middle school science and art teacher Lori Bellamy and veteran reading specialist Roy Matieson to create this neighborhood tutoring and study skills center. Firefly is offering a range of services including: tutoring for students who are struggling; enrichment for students who need an extra challenge; afterschool care that includes help with homework; study skills classes; and MAP/MSP …
Julia’s Bakery Bakes No More
Last week, alert reader Michelle notified us of the impending closure of Julia’s Bakery (not to be confused with Julia’s Restaurant which is still alive and well). We haven’t been able to get the inside scoop (the former bakery manager declined to be interviewed and phone calls to Julia’s owner have not yet been returned), but thought Wallyhood readers would want to know that they should not stop by the bakery in hopes of coffee or yummy baked goodness.…

Ordinary Mortals Can Party With a Purpose
This week, I had the chance to catch up with Tara Shuttleworth, founder and organizer (along with eight other women) of the Goddess Festival.
My first question (and apparently I am not alone!) was about the name: How did she arrive at the name “Goddess Festival” and what does it say about the festival?
Tara assured me that you neither have to be female nor a pagan to come to the festival. She and her co-organizers picked the name “Goddess” because to them it evokes heart and this festival is being organized as an act of love. To Tara, a …
Serving Up Love Alongside Lunch
This past year I had the pleasure of spending many hours in the lunchroom of the joint “McDonald-Lowell APP Elementary Cohousing Unit” at the former Lincoln High School (sometimes also referred to as the “home for wayward elementary schools”). There’s not a ton of great things to be said about a high school being used as a holding space for 600 elementary school students, though each program really did make the best of it. However, one of the shining lights of last year was Joanne Querin-Sorenson, the kitchen manager (who also responds to “Lunch Lady,” “Cafeteria Lady,” and “Kitchen Lady”).…
The Pineapple Express
Jay Patrikios and Cassie Martin spent their fourth date touring the house that would one day become their home. Jay had a feeling about both his date and the house, and ended up committing to both of them.
After remodeling their little bungalow with a modern eye and a taste for environmental-friendliness, Jay and Cassie found themselves needing extra space (their family will grow by one this October). The couple wanted something that would suit their sense of style as well as their sustainability ethic. They disassembled their garage, which they subsequently repurposed as a shed, and replaced it with …
Veggies, Veggies Everywhere!
Recently, my family and I took a vacation to visit my mom in Southern California. After several days of doing nothing but hitting the pool with the kids, my husband and I finally took a walk through the neighborhood. As green and well-manicured as the many lawns were, I found myself missing the variety of plants that grow in the yards here in Wallingford. Additionally, there was a noticeable dearth of front yard vegetable gardening going on down there.
I must confess that I am a raised-bed junkie. I positively love scouring the neighborhood for creative ways to grow veggies …
