Hello! I am past president of the Wallingford Community Council and spent 13 years at Microsoft as a developer and manager, concurrent with Ballmer's reign. I helped renovate Meridian Playground and have guided several transportation and parks projects in the neighborhood. If you have a project in mind, the WCC is a great resource for figuring out how to make it happen!

Bittman Estate Goodies At Ballard Reuse

Eric December 24, 2015 4 Comments

As Interconnection is to computers, Ballard Reuse is to houses. Some items from the Bittman Estate are available there now, including a Murphy Bed and doors (pictured below).

James Taylor of Ballard Reuse says that the historic estate itself is being well cared for- this is not a gutting or tear down situation, just a few items that didn’t fit in the house anymore as it is being cleaned up with modern electrical and plumbing.

Ballard Reuse is closed until after Christmas, but if you’re interested then pop over on the 26th. The items are in a separate area of …

New Lowrise Development at 3925 2nd Ave NE

Eric December 23, 2015 44 Comments

A new development is popping up in Lower Wallingford, replacing 2 bungalows with 7 town homes. The bungalows there now look great and it is too bad they will be demolished:

This will be the new view of the site:

Getting building materials for the project will be simple, the location is 1 block from Dunn Lumber:

All the new units include parking and roof top decks- looks like standard modern box architecture. Unfortunately, some of the 7 town homes don’t face the street or have front yards. It is good that the large tree on the property will be …

Wine World Gone? Get Gassed At Shell.

Eric December 22, 2015 21 Comments

Wine World is currently closed and is stating that it’s a temporary liquor license issue due to ownership transfer paperwork complications, but there are fiscal complications on top of that. Being closed at Christmas will of course not help.

Not only has there been trouble keeping the shelves stocked lately, but they’ve gone on record looking to sublet part of their space. I reached out to Brian Smith of the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board to get details on the license issue, who writes:

Wine World and Spirits, LLC applied for an application to assume a spirits retailer license …

Care about I-5 noise in lower Wallingford? Then it is important you attend this meeting on Wednesday night to show WSDOT you care:

Sharad reports for the community:

Concerned Wallingford residents have been trying to get WSDOT to do noise mitigation for the stretch of Wallingford that runs along I-5 where there is no sound mitigation (5th ave, from 45th street down). We’ve been working with WSDOT and the WA …

How To Have a Generous, Fun, Waste-Free Christmas

Eric December 12, 2015 1 Comment

Buy! How about an HTC Envy or a Ford Exterminator or an Amazon Crap Box? Buy Buy Buy! Paris global warming talks and Grinchy fables about joyous singing without presents be damned, Christmas cheer is built on coal fueled crap from China.

Putting aside carbon waste, there’s also economic losses- Christmas destroys an estimated 13 billion dollars in value per year. It’s called “dead weight loss” when you convert cash to something less valuable than the cash. If people want a pasta maker they’ll buy a damn pasta maker.

On the flip side, do you really want to give a …

Wallingford Light Rail Tunnel Study Results From Sound Transit

Eric December 8, 2015 37 Comments

Sound Transit wrapped up their study of a light rail tunnel through Wallingford, 3.4 miles from Ballard to the U-District. The rail line as it is conceived would feature 3 new stops, in Wallingford, in Phinney, and Market Street. It would not continue past the U-District station already under construction, instead terminating there. At this time it is not being proposed in conjunction with a rail line from downtown to Ballard, but rather as a discrete project that would exist if the downtown to Ballard rail line did not exist.

Sound Transit estimates it will cost a little more than …
