Note, though, that this post was written on Saturday, prior to the Breast Cancer 3-Day walk’s visit to Wallingford, but our lazy editor didn’t notice it until Sunday, after the march had gone through, but still has good info about the event for those who caught it).

The Breast Cancer 3-Day is an annual 60 mile walk designed to raise funds and heighten awareness for breast cancer.  It’s also a wonderful opportunity to celebrate survivors, victims, care providers, and familes who’ve been affected by the disease.

The Office of Economic Development is seeking nominations for the Mayor’s Small Business Awards 2009 through September 2nd.

According to the OED (not the Oxford English Dictionary, the economic guys downtown), the annual awards honor the diversity and excellence of 10 small businesses in Seattle, as well as their contribution to our economic vitality and quality of life.

Wallingford is great, and so are our small businesses.  Nominate your favorite.  Nominate your own.  Nominate your neighbor.  It’s been a tough year, and props are in order!

The Seattle Weekly’s “Best of Seattle 2009” issue is out now and makes for some mighty fine readin’. Wallingford fared well this year, but we already knew it would. Cuz Wallingford is awesome.

In the mid-70’s my grandfather grew watermelons and cantaloupes on his Midwestern farm.  When I was tall enough and strong enough to help out in the late summer, we’d go pick those melons, and toss them in the back of his yellow and white striped pick-up truck. Then we’d drive to the town square to sell them to our “neighbors” – if the word neighbor can be used to describe someone who might live 10 miles from you with only a dirt road and a few cows in between.
