New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat rolled into Seattle on July 31, where more than 4,000 costumed bicycle enthusiasts swarmed Gas Works Park to increase awareness of cycling as a sustainable form of transportation. The event raised $11,500 for Bicycle Alliance of Washington and Bike Works to continue bike advocacy.

In addition to raising money, Tour de Fat swapped a car for a bike with Seattle resident Dawn DeGroot. Naturally, we had to ask her all about it!

Wallingford Community Kitchen Celebrates MLK Day

Sustainable Wallingford’s Rachel Duboff has given us the deets about the first Wallingford Community Kitchen of 2011. And get this: gifted chef and local cooking instructor Patrice Savery will be on hand to assist in the preparation of some truly Southern menu items. (Yes, “Southern” is capitalized & always should be.)

The menu includes Johnny cakes, black eyed peas, braised greens, and sweet potato pie. Yum!

Years ago in Austin, Texas, I rented an apartment way too close to the University of Texas.

Some of my very young neighbors enjoyed organizing drum circles. They’d gather up some friends, some drums, and lots of beer. Then they’d head to a highway underpass with fantastic acoustics and drum away. I regret now that I never joined them, mostly out of fear of being the only adult present during the debauchery (a fear pretty much confirmed the night they set our apartment building on fire after a post-drumming drunken barbecue).

The Bathhouse Ensemble presents their second annual New Year’s Eve production of The Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr (abridged). The show starts early, at 7pm, and runs less than two hours so you’ll have plenty of time to par-tay like it’s the next-to-last year ever. Cuz it is, you know.
