The gardening season for 2025 is upon us. The last frost day for Wallingford (zone 9a) is past, so it is time to roll up your sleeves and start tilling. April is the perfect time to start seeds indoors, or venture out to a plant sale event. The sooner you get started, the longer your growing season will be. To help with your summer gardening, there are two amazing plant sales taking place in the neighborhood in the coming weeks.
The first one, organized by Freeway Estates Community Orchards (FECO), will be on Sunday, April 13th, from 1-4 PM at 6030 6th Avenue NE. They will offer veggie starts, native and ornamental plants, seeds and more. Proceeds support this cool little north-end orchard, which also raises vegetables in the summer to donate to the FamilyWorks food bank.
Secondly, the annual Tilth Edible Plant Sale will be held the weekend of Saturday May 10th and Sunday, May 11th from 9 AM – 3 PM at Meridian Playground, 4800 Meridian Ave N. While the weekend events are free to attend, there is early bird access for $35 on Friday, May 9th from 5-7 PM. All proceeds from the weekend’s sale benefit Tilth Alliance’s mission of providing gardening resources and education for a better food future. More information, including plant lists, instructions about staggered entry, and parking options, is available on their website at the link above.
Plant sales offer more than just supplies for your garden. They are great community events to connect with other gardeners, learn about different gardening practices, and get inspiration for your garden. The events also offer games, food, and vendors selling gardening-related products.
For example, coinciding with the Tilth Edible Plant Sale is the Good Shepherd P-Patch’s annual bake sale. Each spring, Good Shepherd gardeners shake off the dust from a long winter’s slumber and fire up their ovens to bake all kinds of scrumptious and decadent treats. Gluten-free, vegan, and doggie treats will be accommodated. Proceeds from the bake sale support gardening supplies for the P-Patch.
