In April 2024, Seattle Parks & Recreation began a public engagement process for renovating the play area at Meridian Playground. This project aims to make site improvements to the play area located within the western half of the former Home of Good Shepherd property. Most components of the play area were constructed in the early 1980s, and revised in 2002, and some equipment was replaced through a Neighborhood Matching Fund project in 2011. Several elements/features within the play area such as existing play equipment, art paving, play area ramps, custom-made v slides, and rubber tiles need to be renovated or replaced.
This play area project will replace the play equipment and make accessibility improvements to the route from the main parking area and the restroom in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). A couple of current play area park pictures are below.
An initial public survey was held which helped the design team know which existing features the community liked, and which types of play equipment should be included in the updated design. Results from this first survey helped the design team to develop three concept designs for the play area.
On July 31, 2024, at the Wallingford Farmers Market, members of the design team were available to take questions and explain the three design options which are summarized below.
Option 1: Play equipment is made of durable natural wood materials; Design character is whimsical and sculptural; and plantings are native Pacific northwest woodland planting (Ferns, Serviceberry)
Option 2: Play Equipment is Modern and bold, with adventurous components; This option explores replacing aging trees between upper and lower levels; and planting is more gardenesque, with bold colors (Hydrangeas, Maples)
Option 3: Play Equipment is abstract with bright colors; Design character is flexible and fun; and plantings are simple and durable, with pops of color (Liriope, Honeylocust)
Following a second public input survey in Fall 2024, the project design team on Dec 8th, 2024, issued an updated progress report which is presented below. Please note the schedule has shifted considerably from the original design proposal and includes contact information of the new project manager.
From Design Team
Thank you to everyone who participated in the public process by attending public meetings and participating in the survey! Comments and insights from the public helped the design consultant refine several site layouts and play equipment options. All of the existing sculptures on columns around the upper play area remain, although the sandbox and steps between the upper and lower play areas will be removed. Active areas in the play areas will have rubberized surfacing to provide better accessibility for all. Online survey responses and submitted comments showed that many people liked more natural-appearing play equipment. This is reflected in the type of selected play equipment shown in the preferred concept design in the link below. I extracted out a couple of highlights from the Preferred Design Concept.

In addition, this project will be making accessibility improvements to the restroom structure adjacent to the play area. Construction of both projects will be coordinated to minimize the length of closures.
