The sense that Wallingford is a small town within a big city is one aspect appreciated about this neighborhood. A big part of that feeling is neighbors supporting each other, the local small businesses and organizations that reside here. Vital to the vibrance of our community is the support of local activities, such as the Wallingford Parade, the Wallingford Community Senior Center activities, Family Works, school groups and activities like St. Benedict’s Great Bratwurst Festival, and civic organizations such as the Wallingford Community Council and Historic Wallingford.
The goal of this blog post is to point out and thank the community members who are stepping up to make an event supporting community advocacy by Historic Wallingford to be a fabulously fun and successful event. The Roaring Twenties Speakeasy Cocktails and Canapes is planned to be an immersive historic event with costume, food and drink, music, and dance harking from the 1920s. The event will be held at Murphy’s Pub, on the corner of N. 45th and Meridian on Sunday, September 15th from 4:30-6:30. Learn more and sign up for tickets to the event here: https://www.historicwallingford.org/speakeasy/
Like threads in a tapestry, we are knitting this event together to kick it into high gear. Let me share details.
Thank you to our sponsors for their support: JAS Design Build, Cascadia Pharmacy Wallingford, Bedrooms & More, Verity Credit Union and the Wallingford Center Merchants Association. As always, Historic Wallingford appreciates support from 4Culture, the Cultural Funding agency of King County has partially funded this event.
A major focus of a brief program led by master of ceremonies, Tyson Baty aka Al Capone, is recognition of the significant contributions to the community by two local businesses in Wallingford; Murphy’s Pub is the oldest Irish Pub in Seattle and Changes Bar & Grill is the longest running gay bar in Seattle. Both offer fun, great food, drink, and a wonderful place to stop by and relax. Each will receive an original watercolor of their establishment by UW Landscape Design Professor, Daniel Winterbottom in honor of this recognition. Follow Daniel’s artwork on Instagram @koolbreeeeeeze. Thanks to Heidi Favour for designing the event graphic and Frame Up Studio for help framing. Thank you to Chelley Bassett & Eamonn Davey at Murphys Pub for supporting this event in their place of business. Across the street at Changes Bar & Grill, we thank Floyd McIsaac for his long-term stewardship of this safe place for the LBGTQ community.
JAZZ Standards, Milo Petersen and Michaela Miller will perform live music. As well Charleston lessons will be offered by Historic Wallingford volunteer, Kim Knightingale, who is also directing décor for the evening. Look for the 1929 Ford Model A Phaeton and 1928 Ford Roadster Pickup joining us for the party parked on 45th.
Learn more about prohibition in the City of Seattle as Brad Holden, author of Seattle Prohibition: Bootleggers, Rumrunners & Graft in the Queen City will broadcast a podcast from the event. This book was the inspiration for this event! Brad is a self-proclaimed urban archaeologist and can be followed on Instagram @seattle_artifacts.
A Silent Auction will be the primary fund-raising effort for the evening. Volunteers have gone far and above to share the inspiration of Historic Wallingford recognizing legacy business in the neighborhood and collaborative activities to solicit donations for this auction. Pam Singer has been knocking on business doors in the Tangletown part of Wallingford and volunteers Ron & Cheryl Waldman were on the beat along Stone Way and 45th. Thank you all so much! This auction should put the “fun” in fundraiser.

This financial support will enable Historic Wallingford to continue community activities that enhance where we live. The organization has supported financially and promotionally the bi-annual cleanup efforts on 45th and initiated the collaborative group, Wallingford Beautification. Wallingford Beautification is in the middle of a project adding public art to three utility boxes on the 45th. This project was funded by a Department of Neighborhoods Small Sparks Grant, donations from community members, the Wallingford Community Council, Wallingford Chamber of Commerce and Historic Wallingford. Also, Wallingford Beautification is coordinating with resources from the City of Seattle to help clean our neighborhood.
This is a first-time effort for Historic Wallingford to produce an event on this magnitude and a large silent auction. Hats off to the leadership team of Patti Gray Whann, Vanessa Chin, Kathy Baron, Kim Knightingale, Ron and Cheryl Waldman, Pam Singer and Larry and Rhonda Bush.
