On Sunday, September 15th you are invited to join the fun at Murphy’s Irish Pub, as we step back in time to experience a slice of history. Historic Wallingford will host an immersive historical experience with food and drink typically found at a speakeasy during prohibition in the 1920s. During prohibition, a speakeasy was an illicit hidden gathering place, where illegal alcohol was served. In 2024, alcohol is no longer illegal—but we will try to recreate a fun social gathering with a nod to the Roaring Twenties. Period dress will be encouraged, and you can jive to live music from the twenties. Let us put the fun in the fundraiser and raise a glass to celebrate the rich history of the community of Wallingford. Learn more about nearby Wallingford legacy businesses that support the hide-away vibe of the roaring twenties. Sponsors, ticket sales and a silent auction will help financially support community advocacy activities led by Historic Wallingford.
Brad Holden’s book, Seattle Prohibition, Bootleggers, Rumrunners & Graft in the Queen City, was inspiration for this event. Mr. Holden will be in attendance to share his knowledge of prohibition in Seattle and or/ broadcast his own podcast from the event. And–for more fun, Charleston dance lessons will be offered!
The silent auction will offer an array of tantalizing merchandise and experiences for you to bid on to support the effort. Donations for the auction are welcome as well.
Currently, J A S Design Build , Cascadia Pharmacy Wallingford, and Bedrooms&More are sponsors for this event. There are slots for two more sponsors. If you are interested in being a sponsor or have experiences or items for the auction to donate, please contact Patti Gray Whann at [email protected]. Historic Wallingford appreciates the community’s support a great deal.
Let’s applaud Murphy’s Pub, Seattle’s Oldest Irish Pub led by Chelley and Eamonn, for assisting Historic Wallingford host this event. Murphy’s is a significant gathering place for Wallingford and the site of so many community and family events. At the stroke of midnight on my daughter’s 21st birthday, she pulled me along to Murphy’s so she could have her first legal drink! One of her UW classmates was there as well, doing the same. We appreciate the music, food and fun they offer. Thank you, Murphy’s!
And one more shout out to graphic artist, Heidi Favour. Heidi designed the graphic for the Roaring Twenties Speakeasy Cocktails and Canape event, as well as many other images and holiday cards, that support Historic Wallingford. Thank you, Heidi!
Tickets for The Roaring Twenties Speakeasy Cocktails and Canape event will run $45 each and are available here. A ticket will allow entry and participation, as well enjoy an assortment of appetizers typically found in the 1920s, and one specialty drink known from this era. A cash bar will be available for additional beverages. This event is partially supported by 4Culture.
