Apparently, pretty challenging, according to Yalcin Ataman, owner of Fainting Goat Gelato. Since 2009, Fainting Goat occupied a spot in the retail building on the south side of N. 45th St and Burke Ave. But when the building was slated for demolition in 2022, Fainting Goat had to find a new home. They managed to secure a new space in Wallingford and open a new location in Fremont.
So, where’s the trouble? Ataman has had a lease for a new space between Kokkaku and Taco Time on 45th (Formerly home to Trent’s on 45th) since May of 2023. But, has not been able to open his doors primarily due to delays on permits.
It was as confusing listening as I’m sure it can be to navigate the system. But it sounds like the Atamans have made every effort to follow rules, respond to requests and resubmit paperwork. The sewer had to have a full signoff and inspection, but due to an upgrade to part of it, they had to start the entire process over again. When the city learned they had opened a second location, they routed them through franchise rules which added further delays and additional work needed to be compliant.
The other issue is crime, which they are no stranger to. When I spoke with him, Mr. Ataman was replacing a lock that a thief had broken through and stolen power tools. Fortunately, they abandoned the tools in the alley and he was able to retrieve them.
Here’s to hoping the new year will bring with it the open (and well-secured) doors of Fainting Goat.
