The Wallingford Local radio program, produced through a joint effort of Historic Wallingford, the farmers market and SPACE 101 FM, has been airing on the last Wednesday of each month live from our farmers market since May. In June, Julie and I were invited to talk about Wallyhood, and last month, I was back to help host a trivia contest. This coming Wednesday, I’ll be on the air again for the fourth episode of the Wallingford Local. (I’m not sure if that’s a warning or an enticement.)
There are a number of ways to listen:
- Come see us live at the Farmers Market at Meridian Park!
- Go to SPACE 101.1 FM on your radio dial
- Stream from the SPACE 101.1 website. Click on “Listen Live”
- If you can’t tune in to the live broadcast, the program will be archived here.
As I write this, I’m not exactly sure what’s planned for this episode, but another trivia contest may be in the offing. Below is a transcript of last month’s contest with host Feliks Banel assisted by me and featuring two contestants.
Feliks: We’re gonna do a trivia contest now. Give me two people who think they know their trivia pretty well. There’s a great prize. Hold it. The prize we have, we have a wonderful space 101.1 FM T-shirt. Who wants to compete for a prize? It’s really easy to win, anybody, come on, I need somebody, come on, it’s Wallingford. Everyone’s introvert, extravert here. Can someone come up and compete in the Wallingford trivia contest? No, you’re gonna be on the show later, Dan. You can’t be in the contest.
Come on. I need somebody. Come on. It’s painful here. The listeners at home are hating this. They’re okay. Alright, is there somebody wants to compete against this volunteer? Who make it a showcase of this person’s knowledge. Okay, we have a second contestant. Okay. All right. Go ahead and sit in the chair here. We obviously choreographed this very carefully beforehand, spent hours working on how we’re going to do the show.
You know, we’ve put a lot of time into the actual … it looks chaotic and disorganized. But really it’s just, it’s very finely tuned. Okay. So this is the first ever Wallingford trivia contest. I want to invite up Jack McLaughlin. He’s with Wallyhood. He’s an expert on Wallingford trivia, and you’re going to ask the first two questions, okay, and we’ll give you the first question, just randomly. I’ll give you the first question. Maybe. The second question, right? And we’ll figure out how that works. Okay, go ahead here Jack. What’s go ahead and read the first question here in the Wallingford trivia contest here on the Wallingford Local.
Jack: Before QFC opened on the corner of Wallingford Ave and 45th Street, another grocery store occupied that space. What was it called?
Feliks: Hold your answer. First of all, what’s your name and do you live in Wallingford?
Contestant 1: So my name is Brooke and I no longer live in Wallingford, but I did when we went to college. So we’ve gone back a ways — 90s.
Feliks: Okay, so that question you hear did you understand the question that Jack has asked. Okay, do you know the answer to the question? Alright, raise your hand if you know the answer to the question that Jack has. Okay. So a lot of people know the answer but let’s see. So what’s the answer to that question.
Contestant 1: I believe the answers the Food Giant.
Feliks: Jack is that correct?
Jack: That is correct. [Ding, ding, ding!]
Feliks: Alright, so tell me your first name again.
Contestant 1: My name is Brooke.
Feliks: So Brook has one point. First, what’s your name?
Contestant 2: Binay.
Feliks: Say that again?
Contestant 2: Binay.
Feliks: Okay, here’s your question coming from Jack. This is question number two on the Wallingford trivia contest live on the Wallingford Local.
Jack: Where was this farmers market before it moved here to Meridian playground?
Feliks: Who knows the answer to that question? Raise your hand? Okay, not as many people know the answer. Binay, do you know the answer that question
Contestant 2: No.
Feliks: Okay. Does anybody want … Do you want to steal, Brooke?
Contestant 1: I can’t take it for the steal. I don’t know the answer.
Feliks: Okay. Audience. Everyone shout it. Where was this farmers market before it moved to Meridian Park?
Audience: Wallingford Center!
Feliks: That’s correct. Okay. Just to go over the score again, Brooke has one; Binay has zero, Okay? And those are the Wallyhood questions. I have a couple questions as well. I’m gonna find a winner here. I feel like … here, hold this microphone for me. Hold this clipboard for me. Binay, tell us why you left Wallingford again?
Contestant 2: So I lived here in college and I think I lived at 38th and Densmore for a couple of years and then mostly moved into Fremont after that. And then I left Seattle for a good 15.
Feliks: Give me the microphone back. Okay, that’s more detailed more looking for Binay. That’s okay. Alright. So question number three is for Brooke. Actually question number three is for Binay. We can mix it up here. What is the official name of the Aurora bridge?
Contestant 2: The Majestic and Wonderful Aurora Bridge?
Feliks: That’s a really good guess. Does anybody know the official name of the Aurora Bridge? Raise your hand. Okay audience. What’s the official name of the Aurora bridge?
Audience: George Washington.
Feliks: George Washington bridge, but nobody calls it that. Okay. All right, so the score still is the same. Brook one, Binay … I don’t want to be too mean. All right, this is for you, Brooke. Who is the namesake of Wallingford?
Contestant 1: John Wallingford. That’s a guess.
Feliks: Who thinks it’s John Wallingford? Raise your hand. One, two, three people. And that’s correct, that’s amazing. I didn’t think anyone would get that. It’s actually John Noble Wallingford Junior, but John Wallingford is closer. Judges? Yeah, on Jeopardy the judges would say that was fine. All right, Now let’s see as the bonus question. Okay, so you have two points, Have a three-player question, but this is a really tough one, but you might know this given that you look work for Tilth. I’m gonna risk this. Okay, the question is who designed Gas Works park?
Contestant 2: Nuns.
Feliks: Does anybody know who designed Gas Works park, audience? Audience, call it out. Rich Haag. That’s correct. Okay, all right. Well that was a good try. You could have stolen the game with that. So Brooke here, you’re the champion of the first ever Wallingford trivia contest on the Wallingford Local, and for your troubles, for your pleasure, we have this beautiful Wallingford space. 101. FM t-shirt, and Binay we have a lovely parting gift for you – a space 101 badge. So give a big round of applause for Brooke and for Binay for being willing participants in our trivia contest.
