We’re having a meeting to power up a Wallingford Emergency Preparations team. This team will help Wallingford prepare itself to withstand a major civil emergency (think long-term power outage, earthquake or sustained wildfires.) Volunteers in other Seattle neighborhoods have built a system of “Emergency Communication Hubs” to help their communities after a big event. Hubs coordinate “neighbors helping neighbors”. A Wallingford team can help keep your neighbors well and safe.
You are invited to join. We will get together to determine what you want to do to move Wallingford more toward being ready for the next major civil disaster.
Community Meeting
Tuesday, July 18 7pm
Good Shepherd Center (4649 Sunnyside Ave N – just east of Meridian Playfield) in the Wallingford Community Senior Center on the ground floor.
Our speaker will be Ann Forrest, longtime disaster educator and Hub volunteer
Hope to see you on the 18th! We are especially needing to identify a few people who can provide leadership for the team.
Please encourage your Wallingford friends/neighbors to attend – ALL ARE WELCOME!
If you can’t come on July 18 but would like to be kept informed on what is happening, please just send an email to [email protected] saying you want to be kept in the know or with a short note on how else you want to help.
Another opportunity to learn an important way to protect your friends and family will be the hands-on CPR training being offered by the Fire Department at the Wallingford Community Senior Center on Monday, July 24 at 11:45 to 12:45 pm. Register for this class at [email protected]
And Tuesday, August 1 is National Night Out. This is a time when neighbors get together to catch up with each other on what’s been happening and to build stronger relationships in the rest of the neighborhood. So far, 20 blocks in Wallingford have registered their intention to hold a small block party. Check the map on the City’s website to see if there is one already planned near you. If not, you can sign up. Most folks will be holding a small get together in their yard but with registration you can get permission to block off the street for children’s games in the street, a band concert, a pot luck supper or a visit by a police officer or a fire truck. Not everyone gets a fire truck but you can ask. Over the years some blocks have developed quite a reputation for a great party.
