A guest post from neighbor, Daniel Stevens —
Hi neighbors!
Long time reader and Wallingford resident here passing along an upcoming neighborhood event for lovers of all things fruit trees and sustainability (and if those two didn’t draw you in: how about all you drink cider from top cideries and breweries in the city like Fremont Brewing, Seattle Cider, Greenwood Cider, Schilling and more plus dinner and some killer silent auction items).
My wife’s organization, City Fruit, is hosting their annual Celebrates gala at the Fremont Abbey Arts Center celebrating their 2022 harvest season and honoring the many neighborhood volunteers and supporters throughout the year. It’s a pretty exciting time for the organization as this is their first in-person event in over two years, weathering the pandemic and this year’s difficult harvest conditions so they can put on a fun event for a really good cause.
What is City Fruit?
City Fruit is a hyper-local food justice organization based in Seattle promoting sustainability through the reduction of food waste,
redirecting surplus good fruit from neighborhood trees and public orchards to food banks, meal programs, and fruit-for-all farm stands all throughout Seattle. They also work with community partners to transform your undersized and/or buggy fruit into pies, jams, breads, and more. A core belief of the organization is that nutritious, affordable, and culturally relevant food should be available to all. Their mission is simple: City Fruit harvests and stewards urban fruit trees to support sustainable and equitable access to fruit.
Many of our neighbors are already familiar with City Fruit, leveraging their tree care and educational services. They not only help tree owners with ongoing maintenance to ensure healthy growing trees, but they also tend to many of the parks, public spaces, and p-patches we all enjoy across the city that are home to apples, pears, plums, and other fruits!
City Fruit’s new office is right here in our neighborhood on the western edge of Wallingford in the 4000 Aurora office.
The Event
Celebrates is City Fruit’s annual harvest gala, where we celebrate the harvest and honor the many community volunteers, donors, and
partners that helped us make the year a success! This year, we are honoring special awardee Harvest Against Hunger! The theme this year is the Roaring 20(20s) so come dressed in your best cocktail attire.
Your ticket includes cider tasting throughout the night (open bar), a seated dinner, and some exciting silent auction and raffle items available – including Alaska Airline tickets, a signed Kraken hockey stick, gear from EVO, Mariners tickets and a lot more. As all gifts were donated by members and partner orgs and 100% of the proceeds will go back to City Fruit’s operating budget. The event is a great way to mingle with neighbors, enjoy some really great food and drink, and support an organization right in your backyard that’s making a huge impact in our community.
