Quick update to yesterday’s post about garbage pickup in the wake of the this past week’s blizztastic weather event. As of 9:00 PM Thursday night, SPU is now advising:
- Monday, Thursday, and Friday customers who have not received service are asked to put their garbage bins and bags out at the curb beginning Friday, Feb. 15, for pickup Friday or Saturday. Customers may put out double the usual amount of garbage at no additional charge.
If you have somehow managed to collect so much trash that you are unable to wait for regular pickup (perhaps you were taken up in the pre-storm shopping frenzy and overdid it a tad), SPU is also offering free garbage dropoff:
While we will be working hard to pick up residential garbage, we will also provide free garbage (no recycling or compost) drop-off sites on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 10 am-3 pm in the following four locations:
Lower Woodland: 50th and Whitman
Magnuson Park: 65th street lot, Parking Lot E
Interbay: 17th Ave. W. And W. Barrett Street
West Seattle Stadium: 35th Ave SW & SW Snoqualmie St.Free Transfer Station Trips:
Throughout this weekend, residents whose collection has been delayed can also drop off a load of garbage, recycling, or compost at SPU’s north or south transfer stations for free. There is a limit of one truck or carload per household up to 420 pounds of combined garbage, recycling, and compost.North Transfer Station is at 1350 N 34th St, Seattle, WA 98103
South Transfer Station is at 130 S Kenyon St, Seattle, WA 98108Transfer Station Hours:

PS Did anyone in Wallingford who normally gets a Friday garbage pickup, actually get their garbage picked up today (Friday?)
None of our neighbors did (we’re near the QFC.)
We usually get our trash collected on Fridays but the trucks came through this morning (Saturday).
We have Friday pickup, and ours hasnt been picked up for 2 and a 1/2 weeks.. I’m pretty sure it’s safe to drive now….
Thanks a second time, Jordan, for the alert — particularly given SPU’s late-night update.
I have a lot of sympathy for SPU’s dilemmas in dealing with the snowfall; but announcing a significant change in plans at 9 PM is not helpful to their customers. Up until then, SPU’s web site stated that homes which normally had their garbage picked up Friday would have a Saturday pickup. However, I woke up this morning to find out that maybe our trash would be picked up on Friday, instead. My neighbors and I had to rush to get our bins put out before heading to work (if we saw the posting in Wallyhood.)
In the future, I would prefer SPU to set low expectations when there’s a lot of uncertainty in the “forecast” for trash pickups. E.g., say something like “We really don’t know yet when we’ll be able to get trash pickups to all places in Seattle. Just leave your bins out curbside; we’ll update you on the website as the pickup prognosis becomes a little clearer.”
Sort of what local weather forecasters do (or should do) when there weather models are showing a lot of divergence in their results.
