Back in late November, I wrote about some sightings of a coyote dubbed “Wally.” I asked for any more photos that folks may have taken of him (or her). A few have trickled in. See the gallery below.
I also heard back from the zoo which, some readers have suggested, may have more information about this particular coyote. They didn’t seem to have any first-hand information about Wally, but there’s this:
Hello Jack,
We wanted to update you that within a couple of months Woodland Park Zoo will have a “Carnivore Spotter” observation reporting tool (very much like our current Otter Spotter site). The observation reporting tool will be linked on this page www.zoo.org/seattlecarnivores . In the meantime, we would recommend contributing sightings to Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife “General Wildlife Observations” map:
https://wdfw.wa.gov/viewing/observations/sgcn/
https://wdfw.maps.arcgis.com/apps/GeoForm/index.html?appid=071be8a784394450b8b26e01a4912962
A frequently asked questions page about coyotes will soon be available on the WPZ page linked above, but Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife also has excellent info on Living with Coyotes here
https://wdfw.wa.gov/living/coyotes.html
We hope this helps!
Best wishes,
ZooInfo
A video of Wally comes to us from Sten, shot at the corner of 41st and Meridian.
And Ginger Hudson writes on NextDoor:
Coyote followed me and my dog tonight
Just a quick PSA — was out walking my dog tonight and a coyote followed us for three blocks until I reached 35th St in well lit area by the park and transfer station. Several cars slowed down bc the coyote crossed the street and everyone was checking him out. A nice neighbor passing by gave me and my little dog a lift home. Will know next time to try to scare it. Keep an eye out esp if you have a small dog
Thanks for the info and the links!
It appears that the coyote(s) are also wandering north of N 45th Street, too.
While we haven’t seen one, our next door neighbor spotted one near the corner of N 46th St and Densmore Ave N, going through garbage on the sidewalk strip. And another neighbor has frequently seen a coyote wandering around the neighborhood near St. Benedict’s, around N 47th & 48th, between Wallingford Ave N and Stone Way N. — as late as 8 AM in the morning.
I saw it in the wee hours of the night, around 3am carrying what appeared to be a cat or some poor animal the size of one..
It slowly wandered across the street staring at me the whole time, seemingly unafraid. This was down closer to Gasworks and heading up the hill adjacent to Wallingford Ave. I was able to get a video of it but my phone went blurry after about a second or so.
It was absolutely huge as well.
Poor Fluffy.
What color was the cat?
It was on the lighter side, gold to tannish brown.. I know there has been missing cats lately and am very much so hoping that it was not one of them.
-apologies for the late reply.
