Today is the last day this year for the Wallingford Farmers Market. The market sets up, as it has all summer, at Meridian Park at 50th St. and Meridian Ave. Hours are 3pm to 7pm. So stop by and pick up your fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables and any essential, hand-crafted, artisan whatchamacallits – or suffer the consequences. These may include shopping at QFC, PCC or even the Ballard Farmers Market (which is open year-round).
Some important notes about parking, should you drive to the market:
- You are requested to park along Meridian Ave
- There is no parking in the Good Shepherd Center Parking lot
- There is no parking on Sunnyside Ave.
Sure, Ballard, on Sunday, is year around, and closer to us, University District is year around on Saturday. And the Queen Anne market is open today (Thursday) and will be for a couple more weeks. That’s a particularly excellent weekday market, with Tonnemakers in full swing now with their vast array of peppers and a truckload of melons, and some farmers you won’t see anywhere else. Couple weeks ago, someone had puntarelle, a type of chicory that’s popular in Italy – actually two kinds, the leafy stretta type, but also the stem-heavy kind that I believe is used in puntarelle alla romana. If you’re starting from the southwest side of Wallingford, it’s only an hour’s walk.
