Our local Olympic competitor, Virginia, will be competing in the gymnastics events being held at Seattle Pacific University on July 3rd, 4th, and 5th at 8:30 a.m. Here’s a note from Virginia:
Hi Neighbors! I am Virginia and I am an athlete. I am a gymnast. I am a skiier. I hike and swim and play bocce. I also LOVE watching other people do sports. Best of all, I live IN Wallingford like many of you.
Did you know the USA Special Olympic Summer Games are going to be right here in our backyard? I hope you will want to come see me and other athletes compete in the Summer Games. They are going to be right here in Seattle (at UW, SPU, Seattle U and other venues) in only a few days. The games begin on July 1st with opening ceremonies at Husky Stadium.
I will compete in gymnastics with gymnasts from 10 other states. I compete in all-around which means I do floor, bars, balance beam, and the vault. I am a level 2. There are 4 levels. The other girls on my team compete in Levels 1 and 3. Three thousand other athletes are coming from places like New York, Texas, and Colorado to compete in all sorts of other events like volleyball, swimming and stand-up paddleboard.

Virginia is 17 years old and is a sophomore at Roosevelt High School. She moved to Wallingford from Fremont when she was 4 years old. She has been in gymnastics since 2002. She competes in Special Olympics on the Washington State Team (known as Team Washington) at the Seattle Gymnastics Academy and with the Roosevelt Rough Riders. In 2016, Virginia was selected to ski with the USA Special Olympic Women’s Alpine Ski Team at the World Games in Austria. She placed 4th and 5th in her events. Virginia is believed to be the athlete who lives the closest to the Summer Games. When not training, Virginia writes plays, poems, and songs, she also loves to read and watches way too much Disney.
Virginia competes at SPU Tuesday July 3 at 9am, Wednesday at 8:30 and Thursday at 8:30
Thank you, Amy! I am so glad you provided this information! I was wondering when she competed. I’ll be there to cheer for my neighbor.
