These are desperate times for those fleeing their home countries for safety and freedom. In the face of the stunning injustices the president’s government has been inflicting on those in need, many of us are wondering what can one person do.
Despite the walls going up (literal or figurative), there are still organizations working to welcome newly arrived refugees into our community. World Relief Seattle is one such non-profit, and I’ve had the pleasure of providing temporary housing to a number of families they are re-settling from Afghanistan, Sudan and other countries here in Seattle. They’re fabulous people who provide housing, job training, and language and cultural education to refugees seeking a better life here.
If you’d like to help them out, you can have some fun doing it this Saturday, June 16th starting at 9:30 am at Meridian Park. Ellie Park is organizing a Cornhole Tournament to benefit World Release Seattle, and everyone is welcome. No experience necessary, no need to pre-register, children and dogs are welcome.
The entrance fee is $30 (all of which goes to World Relief Seattle) and can be paid by cash, check or online (I imagine if you’d like to donate and not play cornhole, you’re welcome to do that, as well).
Registration is from 9:30 – 10 am, tournament starts at 10 am. If you have any questions, contact Ellie by email or visit the event Facebook page.
If you’re like me, though, you have one big question: “what is cornhole?”
Cornhole is a game in which you throw bean bags at board with hole, like in the oddly staged picture above. There, now you know. The game will be played by regulation cornhole rules (apparently, there are such regulations), first to 21 wins, single elimination.
