On Friday, May 11, 2018, Archie McPhee (1300 N 45th St) is unveiling their brand new Rubber Chicken Museum. A Grand Opening ribbon cutting starts at 3:00 p.m. There will be cake! And plenty of other fun surprises and oddities for sure. Bring your own drumstick.
Museum features include the history of the rubber chicken, a signed Svengoolie, the world’s largest rubber chicken, and more! This is clucking awesome!
The museum is located inside the store, and daily museum hours will be the same as store hours:
Monday–Saturday: 10:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
Sunday: 11:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.
The origin story of rubber chickens is dubious. Wikipedia lists origins ranging from medieval court jesters, to soldiers in the French Revolution, to early vaudeville. For more in-depth reporting, check out Modern Farmer’s serious piece about the history, the why, and the pop culture implications of rubber chickens. However, as far as I’m concerned, Archie McPhee is now the authoritative expert on the subject.
Despite the bad puns above, I still feel obligated to end with chicken jokes. Here are two:
Q: Why did the chicken go to the Las Vegas KFC?
A: He wanted to see a chicken strip.
Q: What is the rubber chicken’s favorite local hike?
A: SQUAK! Mountain
Q: What do a bike and a rubber duck have in common?
A: They both have a handlebar, except for the duck.
