I asked the Seattle Police Department for more information on the incident and received the following reply. It is cut and pasted, unchanged from the SPD response below:
On Saturday evening at approximately 8:00 pm officers responded to reports of a man with a gun in the 200 block of NE 45th St. As officers were headed to the call, there were updates from other 911 callers stating that the same individual had been harassing tenants inside an apartment building, and walking into neighboring businesses threatening employees and customers. One of the witnesses stated that the man lifted his shirt and displayed what the witness believed was a black semi-automatic handgun.
Officers were interviewing the numerous witnesses and various locations in Wallingford when another update came in stating that the suspect had returned to his residence at the apartment building in the 200 Block of NE 45th. Officers attempted to convince the suspect to come out, but it was clear that he was becoming more and more agitated and was in crisis, based on the comments he was making. Believing he was armed, officers began evacuating the neighboring apartment units.
A police negotiator responded and attempted to establish a dialogue with the suspect, but they were unable to convince the suspect to exit his apartment.
A search warrant was written and was granted by a judge. SWAT officers responded to the scene to of the barricaded individual.
After a long period of attempting to negotiate with the suspect, SWAT used several “less lethal” devices (noise makers) to get the suspect’s attention. The suspect refused to exit. SWAT finally entered the apartment and took the man into custody.
The 38-year-old male was arrested and booked into the King County Jail for investigation of felony harassment. Officers searched the apartment per the warrant but did not locate any firearms. Detectives will continue to follow up on this incident.
Original Post:
Police activity has been ongoing in the area of 45th and Thackery since about 1am. The impacted area has covered multiple blocks. Buses and cars have been rerouted all evening. We will post more as we learn more.
No coverage on any of the TV or ST websites. Funny how what seems so major to us is sometimes so inconsequential to the city’s “news” purveyors.
I’ve noticed that certain types of crime stories are either buried or ignored completely by most local media…
Of course there isn’t much to go on here at this point – updates?
It might involve gangs or homeless. Most of that goes under the radar.
Because what’s newsworthy is not determined by what’s major to you individually. This type of news is only major for the immediate neighborhood, but not so much for the city. If you want news like this to be reported, then the local media would be swamped by downtown incidents.
tl;dr – what seems so major to us is sometimes so inconsequential to the city’s “news” purveyors.
And what’s funny about that? It’s how things should be. There is no such a situation of certain type of homeless-related or gang-related crimes going under the radar. You can just look at all the crime cases and realize how they are like traffic incidents: mostly not reported because there are too many of them. Only incidents major enough get reported. Crimes specifically often don’t get reported individually since most of them have very limited info to write about.
I still have the last word. Bet ya won’t type a response to this!
What do you mean by last word here? Can you explain?
I still have the last word. Bet ya won’t type a response to this!
You didn’t answer my question though. What do you mean by last word? If you mean the last meaningful comment, you definitely didn’t have it. If you mean the last word on the thread, there are other posts below us in the view I have. If you mean the last word typed in terms of time line in this thread, the only claim you can make is that at some specific time you happened to have that with no guaranteed of accuracy for the future.
I still have the last word. Bet ya won’t type a response to this!
I knew you won’t answer my questions. You knew you actually could never have the true last word, since you knew your comment started out as a not very well thought self-important throwaway. It was a reflection of a self-centered instinct as opposed to something meaningful. Once that’s pointed out, you had nothing to offer other than being childish.
Pssst!
I live across the street and woke to a loud bang at 2am, and saw our street lined with police vehicles. From social media I’ve pieced together that an armed man was having a mental health crisis in the apartment above Mr Gyros. The scene was ongoing at 3am when I went back to sleep. The only evidence of the pretty crazy night on our street are broken windows on that apartment, and glass shards on the sidewalk of 45th.
Thank you Kristen. Much appreciated and sorry your evening was disturbed by (yet another) loon with a firearm.
Some things do not get covered. On Stone Way N & 40th 4/06 about 3 PM there was a huge car accident.. the front of a truck was destroyed & a large SUV had side hit. Just one block north.. 2 police cars had Stone blocked off and people and cars were redirected from Stone Way N. Nothing on news.
