Several weeks ago, some of Wallyhood’s fearless editors and a couple dozen faithful readers came out to Murphy’s Pub for our second annual meet and greet. We would like to thank Murphy’s for hosting and accommodating our large, mingling group! A huge thank-you also to those loyal Wallyhood readers who made it out on such a beautiful, sunny summer evening!
There is a lot of history in our humble little neighborhood, and it was such a pleasure to meet some of the long-time residents (some who have lived here since the ’60s!), as well as many younger ones, who are taking an interest in building community and influencing the future of Wallingford.
After the meet and greet, a few of us lingered to hear some of a standup comedy show that was just getting started. I had no idea that this show was scheduled, so I wasn’t planning to stay for more than a few jokes. But, not wanting to be rude by walking out in the middle of someone’s act, I waited until the first comedian’s set was over. Each time I thought I could slink out, I was drawn in and ended up staying until the end of the second, and then the third, and then the fourth. Before I knew it, I had watched the entire show! I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with this talented lineup, who had more than a few audience members LOLing. It was an unexpected treat after an already fun evening, and I will definitely be back!
Wallingford Laughs happens every second Wednesday at Murphy’s, starting at 9 p.m. The show is free, so come on out and have a few beers and a few laughs!
Another unexpected talent coming from our neighborhood Irish pub on Wednesday evenings is Jazz! Thank you to Rory, who brought this to Wallyhood’s attention and gave us a review of the event, which you can read here. Jazz with Phil Sparks and Leif Totusek can be enjoyed each fourth Wednesday, starting at 9:00 p.m.
Other events might not be so surprising, such as the long-standing Tuesday night trivia (so popular that now there is also trivia on Thursdays), the Monday night Traditional Session (Irish music jam), various singer/songwriter performances on weekends, and local sports viewing, but all make for an equally fun time out in the ’hood. If you haven’t been to Murphy’s lately, pick an event from the full September calendar below, and you, too, will be pleasantly surprised!
Also Pleasantly surprised by Murphy’s lovely outdoor patio surrounded by vines. And the great food. I have been digging the Lamb Chops dinner – ordered it 3 times in a row, and then picked the salmon dinner. Great value. Love the new owners.
I used to love their nachoes and fish n chips. I hope that next year for the Wallyhood meetup that everyone is invited equally. I boycotted it due to issues which were apparent at the time. I had concerns about attending.
