This past weekend dozens of neighbors of all ages re-painted the ladybug (a.k.a. Wallybug) at Burke Avenue North and N. 49th Street. Let’s give a big thanks to everyone who came out to refresh this whimsical and vibrant mural!
On Saturday evening the cleanup crew got to work pulling weeds, sweeping, and pressure washing the intersection in preparation for Sunday’s painting. This year’s record-setting dry spell was threatened by rain on Sunday. Luckily, the rains held off and the painting crew got to work as planned. Many of the painters have been helping for years so they made quick work of the refresh.
Wallybug requires an official petition to paint that is gained through SDOT. Petitions to paint are valid for 3 years and the current permit is good through 2018. Painting in 2019 will need a new petition with signatures. Permitting and paint supplies cost about $1,500 annually and donations are generously given by nearby neighbors, many of whom also help with the upkeep.
Here’s an awesome time lapse video from 2011 of the re-painting process. PETA warning: a barbecued pig makes a surprise appearance at 2:36.
Again, Wallingford, thanks for coming together and making the neighborhood an amazing place to live!
Thanks to everyone involved for maintaining the Ladybug — we walk by it most every day, and it’s one of our favorite aspects of the neighborhood.
It looks gorgeous — y’all did a great job!
Love it! Would like one in my neck of the Wallingford woods.
