There have been multiple reports of smashed car windows and two reports of stolen vehicles in the middle of last night in the area of Latona/Thackeray/2nd between 42nd and 43rd. According to neighbors, the best estimate of the timing of the thefts and smashes (assuming they are related) was sometime between midnight and 2:30am.
If anyone has any information that would be helpful to the folks who were affected, please leave it in the comments.
That sucks. Looks like they picked the (quick getaway) one way streets. That makes me think it was some visitors from another neighborhood, as the usual crack/meth addicts who’d smash a car window for 25 cents don’t care about exit vectors.
The only helpful information I have is that you all consider for whom you’ll vote next go-around. I see lots of concern (versus action, mind you) from our current elected officials for the heroin addicts driving a lot of this crime and not as much energy exerted toward protecting homeowners, renters and others who pay for social services directly through property taxes or indirectly through rent. Detox and mental health services for addicts? You bet. Increased police patrols and public safety for victims of drug-fueled crime. Yes. The problem is that Mr. O’Brien and Mr. Johnson don’t seem to see both sides of this coin. When it comes to human waste, needles and crime, “not in my backyard” sums it up quite nicely.
How about the new homeless ordinance the city council is considering, at the behest of organizations like ACLU and Real Change? (I’ve pasted a link to it below.) If this latest bit of insanity passes, the city will have to give $250 to every junkie, tweeker, and criminal whose “right” to camp in and trash any public spot they please is violated.
FYI, Tim Burgess has been the only one so far to speak out against it. We need him to run for mayor!

I agree with you. I think there is some reluctance to address these particular problems as it would be implying that some of the less fortunate are capable of wrongdoing. It offends some liberal sensibilities. The next step is getting real instead of blissful ignorance.
There was another smashed car window break in on Corliss, between 41st and 42nd on either 9/4 or 9/5. I’d like to see more police patrols…
These animals will stop at nothing to steal our fruit.
Around 51st & Latona. Several cars broken into on 9-4-16. They managed to raid mine of several items. No broken windows, so must have been a slim-jim or something similar
We had people staying in our house over the weekend from Canada and they got their window smashed at 45th & Latona the night of 9/4
At what point do we consider enough is enough and start demanding more from our police, mayor and government to which we provide ample taxes and seem to get nothing in return. Why doesn’t every neighborhood have a police force? The only time you spot the police is at Dicks once a week. This is just not good enough, and I am becoming tired of the same old excuses. Can we hire people in government that can do their job, rather than be a poster-child for the minority of the moment?
