The Fremont Arts Council (FAC) is calling for volunteers and locals to participate in the annual Fremont Solstice Parade which has been declared a City of Seattle “City-Wide” event.
This year’s historic parade scheduled for Saturday, June 18th in downtown Fremont has been been delighting crowds at the Center of the Universe with colorful floats, marching bands and the world famous painted Solstice Cyclists since 1989.
Originally modeled after a Santa Barbara parade, the Fremont Solstice Parade offers, “an opportunity to participate in a wonderful piece of art and to celebrate creative expression and what the human spirit can do,” said Balou De La Rosa, Fremont Arts Council Member and one of the original founding members.
The FAC is looking for community support for local folks to participate and for sponsorship from local businesses. According to De La Rosa, her personal vision is to make the annual event part of the community’s consciousness. “The new (FAC) board wants to expand the city-wide event with the idea that the Solstice Parade be celebrated in neighborhoods throughout the city.”
With the new “City-Wide” event status the non-profit FAC is working to make this year’s event the best ever.
“The Solstice Parade has made Fremont what it is. It started out with a couple dozen of us with wagons, boat trailers, (non-motorized) lawn mowers and shopping carts and then running down to the park acting goofy. There’s an amazing amount of creativity that comes out of it,” said De La Rosa.
Now in its 27th year, the parade continues to be listed as one of the top ten things to do in America in the summer.
The nationally recognized event is a huge undertaking and takes a lot of volunteers to bring the parade to life. Building a float is one of the best parts of the whole experience where new friends are made and a sense of being part of something bigger than life is extraordinary. Plan ahead for maximum enjoyment because the Seattle Rock “n” Roll Marathon will also take place on the morning of the 18th.
