Issues of mental health are very much in the news in Washington State and here in the neighborhood. The deep interrelatedness of mental health and homelessness is particularly front of mind here in Wallingford.
The Good Shepherd Center ( 4649 Sunnyside Ave N ) is hosting a showing of Healing Voices to help shine some light on the topic of mental health.
HEALING VOICES explores the experience commonly labeled as ‘psychosis’ through the stories of real-life individuals, and asks the question: What are we talking about when we talk about ‘mental illness’? The film follows three subjects – Oryx, Jen and Dan – over nearly five years, and features interviews with notable international experts including Robert Whitaker, Dr. Bruce Levine, Celia Brown, Will Hall, Dr. Marius Romme, and others, on the history of psychiatry and the rise of the ‘medical model’ of mental illness.
This event is being put on by MindFreedom Seattle, Behavioral Health & Wellness, The Crisis Clinic, and Spiritual Emergence Seattle
For some additional background on the movie: a review from a clinical pyschologist might convince you to attend.
Healing Voices just won an Indie Spirit Award at the Boston International Film Festival a couple weeks ago too! This One Night One Voice movement of showing Healing Voices is hoping to change the conversation and approach to mental health and wellness. Hope to see people at The Good Shepard Center Thursdsy, April 28th at 6:45pm.
Thank you ALL for coming to watch the movie last night! What a great turn out and inspiring and powerful community dialogue! Keep the conversation going and let’s reach our goals of peer run day centers and respites in King County and beyond!
