The U14B Woodland Panthers of SYSA Woodland Park Soccer are doing well and are off to the quarterfinals of the Washington State Rec Cup next weekend. I reached out to coach Ken Convery to write about his experiences with coaching, and he wrote this for us:
I coached with assistants Leo Machado, Erik Rucker and Gerald Lim following the “Play like a Champion” principles in coaching the U-14 boys Woodland Panthers to a District 1 championship. We used the PLAC coaching model from the University of Notre Dame that focuses on the development of the mind, body, and soul of their players and sets mental, physical, and moral goals with young athletes. For example, we worked hard to promote and encourage the development of teamwork and values through interaction with peers. It was a great feeling to see a new player be accepted and thrive within the team. We built a close knit group of 13 and 14 year old boys who won the District 1 championship and are headed to the quarterfinals of the Washington State Rec Cup.
My coaching philosophy takes from US Youth Soccer fundamentals and Catholic youth sports principles to build an extremely competitive and positive environment which encourages athletes to grow physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. Finding the right balance in building an environment that is both competitive and positive was itself a challenge, and we were always tweaking the conditions to not push too hard and find that sweet spot. The team finished the season with an 8-2 record with 5 shut outs and will play in the Seattle Youth Soccer Association City Cup this week. We have a significant amount of talent and athleticism, with great potential, but knew we needed to keep coaching on those key principles to take the team to a championship level. In the Washington State Rec Cup the Panthers played to an exciting 1-1 draw against a very good and undefeated Queen Ann Black Lasers team. They won their final District 1 game 3-1 to take the championship.
I have enjoyed coaching at the rec level with the Woodland Soccer Club and would encourage any future coaches and players that are interested in playing soccer to contact the club through its website at www.woodlandsoccer.org.
Thanks Coach, good luck!
Thanks designed for sharing such a nice thinking, article is good,
thats why i have read it fully
I’ve been surfing online greater than three hours as of late, but I
never discovered any fascinating article like yours.
It is pretty worth enough for me. In my view, if all website owners and bloggers made
good content material as you did, the internet will be a lot more helpful than ever before.
Queen Anne Black Lasers are a notoriously good team, so it’s good to see the Panthers doing Wallingford proud and bringing the Rec Cup north of the ship canal where it belongs!
It’s going to be end of mine day, but before finish I am reading this impressive article to increase my knowledge.
