I wanted to send a quick shout-out to some amazing Halloween awesomeness (and hopefully not foment too much FOMO.)
Zevin and I had a ball reverse trick-or-treating: I outfitted a wagon as a hula-hoop toss game, where everyone who played got a super ball as a prize. We had a little sound system for effect, and a couple bottles of high-end hootch for the adults to enjoy while the kids played, and we pulled our roving party wagon around the streets between 40th and 42nd, from 4th up to Meridian. Thanks to everyone who played, Zevin and I had a ball.
Along the way, we saw some amazing costumes and houses: The house at the corner of 41st and Meridian that was sold recently (after being empty for years, and briefly occupied by squatters) was a truly scary haunted house. The neighbor at the door told me it’s going to be torn down, so they got permission to do whatever they wanted to it in the name of Halloween. Zevin and I got one room in before he decided it was too scary for a 6 year-old and we turned and left.
Then, as they do everyone, Flip at 42nd and Eastern, Betty 42nd and Latona, and Tom just a few houses down from there all had things turned up high, and Kate at 4th Ave just above 42nd offered gluhwein and karoake in addition to the usual Halloween fare.
Wallingford, you know how to do it right.
Yes, we saw your game from our porch, 4 doors down Latona from Betty’s house. Our house had the witchs’ brew scene, the boys night out scene, skeletons, music etc. You were on the planting strip between Jeff’s house and mine. The kids and adults were having great fun with your game. Good job and Happy Halloween.
What a fun and neighborly approach to trick or treating. I wish our paths had crossed. We will try to find you next year.
