Annie Lareau emailed us today that there was a coyote sighting near 40th and Densmore, and then Barbara posted to the Wallingford/Fremont Community Facebook page that she saw one by 42nd and Corliss, so there’s definitely one loping around the neighborhood. They’re nothing to be afraid of…unless you’re a cat, small dog or chicken. Keep ’em locked up safe!
It’s nothing new, we posted about coyotes in Wallingford last year around this same time, as well (see Coyote Wallingford, which also has some interesting-to-me information about coyote-wolf-dog hybrids that are showing up in cities across the country). But does make me wonder about my beloved old tom that disappeared without a trace years ago.
I’d be very interested in knowing the time of day the sightings occurred! I’ve seen them in Woodland park, mostly during evening walks (after dark) but I have also seen one early-afternoon. The rabbit population in the park always drops during Coyote season.
Last year I was not aware it was coyote season and was walking my dog near Meridian Playfield one very early misty morning and ahead of us a coyote crossed out path and as we turned the corner a owl swooped down.
Definitely an odd experience.
The coyote I saw was last Wednesday, Nov. 4th at about 7:15 pm.
This website and project is a great resource for better and deeper understanding our Coyote neighbor. It is especially helpful about understanding what they typically eat…which turns out not to be our pets but more so rats…and around here the rabbits (not saying that they couldn’t eat our cats but that is not the first choice). Peace.

My wife reports that as she was returning from the Wallingford Community Council meeting at about 9 pm Wednesday evening she saw what she thought was a coyote running pretty fast down Burke Ave N between 44th and 43rd. She didn’t say anything about it then as she thought she must be wrong. Guess having others report it is verification.
Pretty sure we saw a coyote on Halloween night while trick or treating on 59th and Corliss. Recognizable due to their tall legs. Surprised us…
Can we encourage these guys to eat raccoons?
