Get your velvet foam while you can! Uptown Espresso looks like it’s going to be exiting its spot on 45th about four and a half years after it opened. An eagle-eyed reader writes:
The uptown espresso space is for lease with a move in date of 12/30/15. I don’t think it is publicly listed for lease on the internet at this point, but was listed through a brokerage website on Sept 8th.
There is a big FOR LEASE sign up in the parking lot and it’s been there for at least a few days.
I’m not an espresso drinker, but am sorry to see them go. (I’m actually still sad they won out over a produce market that was also interested in the property when Uptown first moved in.) This has got to be one of the most under-utilized properties in the neighborhood. Guess we can look forward (?) to another high-rise apartment/condo development with ground-floor retail that none of our funky local businesses can afford.
I’m purplexed by why this lot isn’t being developed, yet we’re razing much more usable buildings to build new grand buildings.
Word on the street is this property is contaminated under the parking lot and it would be too expensive to redevelop. I think it used to be a gas station.
