Recently, I did a shout out for piano lessons for Zev, and I got some great, local referrals, folks who teach in their homes here in Wallingford or close by, and some that would come to our home. I also noticed, walking down Latona, a sign in a window for fine art lessons.
It occurred to me that there’s probably quite a few people out there hoping to get their kids enrolled in something, or maybe take on a new instrument or skill themselves in their Autumn years, but there’s no great way to find people that teach.

So I thought I’d offer this post as a little bit of a mini-classifieds. If you teach music or art in (or close to) Wallingford, please let us know about in the comments below. In about a week or so, I’ll re-edit this post to roll up the results, but I’m sure that there will be lots of families coming back and reading the comments in the meantime.
Maybe your student will rock it like this.
HUGE plug for (not in home) Creative Music Adventures, just next to Olympia II. Both our girls got into music there, starting with piano, and can now read music without difficulty. Super teaching staff the years we were there, though I’m sure there is turnover. Now, my oldest is jamming on sax and my younger is happy on violin, both taking through school programs.
The Music advertising is a great idea to get the word out
About 5 months ago our daughter Carly, about to turn 11, started Kid-to-Kid Piano in Wallingford. She teaches classical style, with some children favorites weaved in, to beginners age 7-10. Presently she has 5 students, some have been with er since the beginning. Lessons are $10 for 1/2 hour lesson, given on our home on a grand piano. You can expect to learn using the Faber method. Bring a notebook where she records your specific areas to work on each week. You can hear Carly play a Concerto with her teacher on youtube:

Presently she is a maximum load but if your child would like to be considered if she takes on more students or if someone leaves then please let us know at [email protected]
I’d like to recommend Cascade Piano Studio! We teach piano music to all ages in the Ravenna neighborhood (located at 55th and 30th). Lessons cater to the individual student but typically focus on developing strong reading skills, flexibility in playing from different musical genres, and ability to play with others through duets and ensembles. We use humor, games and fun incentive programs to help keep students motivated. Students participate in two studio recitals and a variety of festivals based on their interest and ability level each year. A free introductory lesson is offered to see if it would be a good teacher/student match. The fall schedule is filling up but there are still a few spots available. Thanks!
For voice lessons, I would highly recommend Dr. Stacey Mastrian: http://www.staceymastrian.com. She is a soprano who just moved to Wallingford from the east coast (to marry me 🙂 ). She was the much-loved Assistant Professor of Voice at the Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College and she has taught privately as well as at American University, Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland. As a performer, she has sung around the world – Carnegie Hall in NY, the Kennedy Center in DC, the Konzerthaus in Berlin, Lincoln Center in NY, and Teatro La Fenice in Venice.
Contact her at Stacey (at) StaceyMastrian.com.
My studio is devoted to teaching young adults and adults, both amateurs and professionals, in a variety of genres (classical, musical theater, jazz, and more). The focus is on a classically-based technique with a strong emphasis on vocal health. In addition to one-on-one instruction, I also give workshops for choirs!
What a great post!
I’d love to contribute by sharing about Neighborhoods in Rhythm, a local company providing in-home music lessons and music therapy services to families throughout Seattle. I founded NIR upon moving to Seattle after completing a degree in music therapy and have been incredibly fulfilled in my work, primarily due to the relationships formed with students and families I’ve been privileged to work with over the past few years. As a Wallingford resident myself, I am the primary teacher to students living in the neighborhood. Here are a few words from some of our neighbors:
“Devon is a delight. A super nice, friendly, smart, great young woman. She’s a pleasure to have around and completely trustworthy. I think she’s a wonderful role model.”
– Molly S., mother of guitar student
“Devon is wonderful! I trust her and like her. I would trust my daughter with her anytime, anywhere.”
– Laurel B., mother of guitar student
Neighborhoods in Rhythm is committed to enhancing the wellness of children and adults by facilitating musical experiences supporting the self-discovery, creative expression, socialization, and identity formation of our students & therapy clients. We offer music lessons on piano, guitar, voice, theory, and songwriting. Weekly lessons are tailored to each student’s musical interests and goals, allowing for creativity, improvisation, versatility, and exploration within structured lessons facilitated by qualified teachers. Children 5+, teens, and adults are welcome! Music therapy services are also available to support individuals with social, emotional, physical, and cognitive goals.
Look forward to hearing from you,
Devon Russell, MT-BC

This is a great resource, yay!
Hi, My name is Brendon, and I am a private music teacher here in Seattle. After I graduated from the Musician’s Institute in Los Angeles in 2002, I started teaching private music lessons (drums, guitar, piano), and have been doing it ever since. I currently have students ranging from ages 3 to 63, beginner to advanced. I have a great connection with kids especially (I have a very high retention rate), I think partly because I am younger and enthusiastic, but also because I follow modern music trends and am often familiar with the artists they listen too (I totally love rocking out to Katy Perry, One Republic or Macklemore!).
I currently live right above Gas Works Park in Wallingford and spend most of the time teaching students in the privacy of their own home (this is usually preferred, as it cuts down on time spent in traffic and waiting in the lobby room). I also have a music studio (mostly for drums–my primary instrument) located in SODO.
I have dozens of positive referrals I can share upon request. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I hope to hear from you soon,
Brendon McCarroll

Hello Fellow Parents,
I am an enthuÂsiÂasÂtic piano and voice teacher who loves my job! I live in Wallingford and I travel to your home for on-site lessons in and near the Wallingford Area.
I believe that lessons should be enjoyÂable and build conÂfiÂdence. The nurÂturÂing of my stuÂdents’ creÂative impulses and perÂsonal interÂests is of tremenÂdous imporÂtance to me. I work with traditional classical music and methods, but also incorporate improvisation, jazz, composition and pop-rock.
I have taught private lesson and group classes from the elementary to college levels. I studied piano and voice at Cornish College of the Arts and have a degree in Music Technology from Evergreen State College.
For more information about my teaching and background please visit my website:
