Here’s the short of it: Art of Confections, the bakery that recently opened in the spot where the Erotic Bakery once stood at 45th and Sunnyside, has closed. There’s a story told by the owner, and a story told by her erstwhile friend and investor, and the stories differ on some key facts. What both agree on is that it is closed and will not be re-opening.
This article originally included a link to a GoFundMe campaign page to raise money for the owner. In its original form, money donated would help re-open the store, but at some point it became clear that the store would not be re-opening (although money was still be collected), and the campaign page has now been updated to reflect that fact.
I’m removing the story because everything beyond what I’ve said above is personal between these two, and I haven’t the interest or means to determine what’s accurate and what isn’t.
If all this leaves you feeling depressed, I urge you to visit The Sweet Side, Hiroki or Trophy Cupcakes, where you can find something to cheer yourself up.
Please do some fact finding before donating to this fund.
IDK…maybe her cakes where good, but the one time I stopped in to check it out, there was a mostly empty display case with a few overpriced scones. I bought a scone and it was… not good. Dry and hard and wholly unimpressive. When I compare to other options both in Wallingford and other neighborhoods, I can’t say that I am surprised or disappointed.
Wow that was quick. Kimmie and the Erotic bakery were there since ’86…and this shop made it … what 6 months, if that, after the doors opened?
It was a weird place… the esthetic was very “Ace of Cakes” in the worst way. They had coffee and cookies and stuff, but it wasn’t comfortable enough to sit and stay for a while. The custom cakes looked cool though. I’m sure the baker will still be successful, they just don’t need to have a whole big shop for it. If you just want to pick up a little treat for yourself, I really recommend the Sweet Side. They definitely went another direction (small storefront, very pretty/modern setup) and it seems to be working out pretty well for them.
Ah, too bad. But, I am not a sweets kind of guy, so I would not likely be the target customer. Now, if someone opened a real boulangerie/bakery/bistro/charcuterie, I would be there fairly often. But, that area does not have the parking or foot traffic such a shop would need.
I was super excited to have this bakery open and we tried it out…found the whole cakes and cupcakes overly sweet and uninspiring. I have yet to find a better bakery than the one in Metropolitan market. But would love to support a local bakery if it was good.
