I am a parent of a current BF Day kindergartner and wanted to let everyone know that we are having an informal meet and greet at BF Day playground structure after school on Tuesday May 12, 3 pm-ish.
This is a sweet, evolving school with many happy kids and involved parents and we wanted to share some of that energy with the community. Please consider coming by to chat and let your kids play at the new super awesome section of the play ground!
I’m happy to answer any questions by email as well.

Beyond BF Day, you should know your kid’s school by now. A lot of times people don’t think about it, but now is a good time to get plugged in and also sign up with your kid’s PTSA. Try joining the PTSA of Hamilton, Green Lake, JSIS, McDonald, or whichever school your kid ended up in.
The PTSA is a news channel separate from the official SPS channel, so you will need to let the PTSA know you exist. Once you’re part of a PTSA, you’ll learn about good stuff happening. My kids are now leaving elementary school, but when I was there the PTSA did these things:
- Organized and staffed all school community events like carnivals and science fairs
- Organized parents and payed a small stipend to provide tutoring services in the school
- Payed for 2 staff persons per year to teach enrichment like music and art, plus payed for a school nurse
- Provided money so teachers could buy books and other materials they need since we aren’t in South Carolina
- Organized parents to support teachers in having a bad principal removed (SPS moved her to a school down south without a PTSA!)
Strong schools are motivated by their community and a shared sense of mission and professionalism, not by administrators with carrots and sticks holding people accountable from the top down. We were very lucky to be part of a strong school at SPS with a strong PTSA, I hope you have similar good luck!
If you have an incoming Hamilton International Middle School student who loves music, check out FOMAHI! (We’re the music boosters club.) You can read more about what we do at: http://www.fomahi.org.
