Mr Gyros is open and it is everything you’d hope for- economical, super tasty, and friendly. I asked why they chose the spot they did and they said it was small and they didn’t want the overhead of a place with a lot of tables since that doesn’t help them. The pita bread is really nice and they offer to make the food spicy, yet my kids both liked the offerings too. They don’t mess around, offering the same basic menu for lunch or dinner.
The block is really fun now and sort of anchors East Wallingford- you have roller derby stuff at Fast Girl, then Mr Gyros, then the Hawaiian General Store + travel agent, coffee at A Muddy Cup, Djan’s Thai, and then a block away is Comics Dungeon. Bedrooms and More looks slated to become some sort of bedroom palace according to DPD plans. It’s too bad it’s all right next to the car-centric places like the gas station, the burger place, and Jiffy Lube, but I guess otherwise rents would go up and the offerings might be less interesting.
As I posted yesterday to the Feb. Mr. Gyros post:
Mr. Gyros is open! We went last night (April 14th) with my in-laws and children to pick up dinner. Yum! We have loved Mr. Gyros ever since 2005 when we lived a few blocks away from their Greenwood location. Now we’re only two blocks away. Needless to say I’m very excited.
And don’t forget Kate’s Pub! One of the most fun + friendly bars in Wallingford. Definitely East Wallyhood is a great place to be.
I went on opening night and totally agree with this post! They’re super friendly and very fast. My falafel sandwich was delicious, packed with fresh, crunchy veggies and excellent falafel. The pita bread has a delicious smoky / grilled flavor. I also got the baba ghanoush and the guy loaded it up with oil, olives, Paprika, and a few cucumber pieces. So excited to have this place in Wallingford!
East Wallingford is the new Brooklyn.
Very exciting for east Wallingford! Can’t wait to eat there.
Welcome, Mr. Gyros! The lamb kebab plate is my favorite. If two of us split one, we’ll have room for a slice of chocolate cake from The Sweet Side next door, another gem in East Wallyhood.
Following is my post from Tuesday night.:
Ate at Mr Gyros tonight and was disappointed. As someone who spent my formative years in Southern Europe/Near East/Middle East, I really wanted to love this place. Granted it was the first day. I had a Gyros Combo meal. Gyros meat looked and tasted like it had been cooking for a week….but this was the first day! The gyros was Greek style with Taziki sauce (sp?) cucumbers, onions and tomatoes. It came with fries and a drink. The fries were some of the best in Seattle. I would go back just for the fries, but there weren’t very many of them. Fries come with goat cheese on them which may sound weird but was surprisingly good. Gyros, fries and a can of soda was just under $10 and filled me up completely. Staff were Hispanic and fully focused on learning their jobs. One of the owners was on hand and was friendly and cordial and only one speaking. My hope is that it will get better with time. It certainly has a great reputation. My opinion is that it has quite a way to go to match Aladin on the Ave.
@Jonberkedal, give it another chance. Even newspaper restaurant critics give a place three tries before dissing it. Business is going to be a little slow while they are opening up and I can see they’d need to learn how to balance supply with demand for gyros meat.
@DOUG. The new Brooklyn, ha. 🙂
Dear east side,
West side Wallingford is still cooler. 😉
Love,
Chris @ Off the Wall
Ps. Nanananana.
wow jonberkendal! it is a long laong way to the U district.. just walking, bussing or trying to drive and every side streetis closed up with construction.
I am excited abotu their opening and plan to try it out asap.
Lighten up. or maybe open a business which is better given yur extreme experiences.
West side: the new Medina 😉
What’s wrong with the “burger place” which has a name, by the way, and has been in Wallingford longer than you have?
Stoked to see Mr Gryos in the neighborhood, less stoked on the new Wallyhood owner’s hatred for Dick’s.
