Paul Dorpat style “Now and Then” posts in Wallingford are easy. Just go to 45th or Stone, take a picture, then look at what Google Street View has for the same place. Here is the site of the new CVS that will be replacing what was Moon Temple, Tully’s, and the Wallingford Neighborhood Office. The new store is supposed to keep the architectural look of the original building, so I assume the stonework at the top is just temporarily removed:
There’s also a nice memorial at the site. Note the apodments looming in the background:
The memorial last week had a nice touch of an upside down smiley face balloon. Thanks to Olivier for this pic:
I assume the missing terra cotta cornice is in the shop for tune-ups and will be replaced, since that’s what was promised by the developer.
This is CVS’s idea of preservation. That building is nothing but bones now.
Long live locally-owned Bartell.
Can see plans as submitted at DPD website. They indicate that the cornice and “decorative” brick are to be “restored” (see page 15)

Just wondering: I noticed (before they took them down) that the cornice had a name and date engraved on it – “Della V. Baldwin, 1929.” Does anyone know who that was or what the history behind it was?
The only Della V. Baldwin I could find, was a Notary Public in the 1920’s in Seattle

Our Dad used to take us to Moon Temple, They had killer drinks.
Thanks Jamie! I wonder if that’s where her office was. I also wonder if her name and date will still be inscribed into the cornice if/when it’s put back up.
People are judging the building by how it looks deconstructed. That is idiotic. Read the final approved design. The building will look far more like the original building once construction is finished and yes indeed the stone cornice will be put back. The tacky changes made decades ago actually bastardized the original design.

I never saw anyone eating in the Moon Temple in the past eight years. I thought it was a front for money laundering.
Here’s some history on the soon to be CVS building. It was originally an A&P grocery store:

If you are really interested in land use issues, a great way to be informed is to go to the Wallingford Community Council meetings, first Wednesday of each month at 7:15 at the Good Shepherd Center. You will get the real story behind development projects, can make your concerns heard, and often will have the opportunity to meet developers. The land use experts on the WCC can answer your questions with factual information.
By the way, at last night’s WCC meeting two candidates running for the new City Council seats attended and I was able to talk to each about an issue that interests me personally.
Give it a try!
I suspect the method being used by the developer allows the project to be considered “a remodel” and to circumvent some aspects of public review. Ha!
I was hoping for something that we need, like another Thai restaurant (kidding). Now there’ll be three pharmacies (four including Pharmaca) on 45th? That’s kind of a drag.
