Patty’s EggNest appears to be closed. New management has reopened the espresso store next to Julia’s. Don’t know if they are keeping the old name. The workmen doing the remodel of the Babalu tell me it is going to be a nail salon – as if we really need that. Rodda Paint and Morgans Plumbing are being replaced by an apartment house – will probably close about March.
Mike followed up with the owners of Patty’s, and learned that it will re-open under the same ownership as Salud Bistro. Patty’s had a complicated ownership structure among siblings and cousins, so perhaps that led to the change.
The restaurant is gutted at the moment. We’ll watch for its grand réouverture.
A nail salon!!!!!
What about Kitaros?
What about that cute Hawaiian Breeze?
That’s going to be one gigantic nail salon.
I don’t see a problem with a nail salon…. It has to be better than the other nails places in the ‘hood! They are mostly terrible in my opinion.
WHAT?!! Morgan’s is going away? That sucks.
New management same owner for the bakery adjacent to Julia’s or new ownership also?
Babalu is being remodeled for a nail salon, not Kitaros and Hawaiian Breeze. Hawaiian Breeze just did a remodel of its own, I doubt they would have done that if their lease was going to be up and they’d be closing.
Isn’t Babalu just one giant hallway? That’s the perfect shape for a nail salon.
I noticed yesterday that Patty’s Eggnest was gone. The new restaurant’s name was on the window but I don’t remember what it said. Not going to miss Patty’s. My daughter had the grossest pancakes from there that I’ve ever tasted. They didn’t even use actual chocolate chips in their chocolate chip pancakes.
Also sad about Morgan’s Plumbing. That place is full of helpful people.
Too bad Babalu can’t reincarnate itself as a cool, fun dance place. Seamonster can be fun for dance but we can use another flavor in the neighborhood too! That will be a palatial nail salon…
I agree with @GCP, Patty’s will not be missed by our family. This is not an exaggeration, it was the worst breakfast we’ve ever had.
It would be nice if there was a cap on the type of businesses that could open if there is a similar type already open. We have a lot if the same type of restaurants and salons. Oh well, new business is a good thing.
You would think that similar businesses would drive each other out, but they tend to reinforce each other (the Starbucks across from the Starbucks). If one is busy, you can roll over to the next one. We WILL have nail superiority!
Patty’s and Chase banks are ubiquitous now. Something closes: boom, there they are!
Our neighborhood doesn’t seem to support much in terms of decent quality restaurants or bars. I wonder sometimes if it’s because we’re a family oriented neighborhood, and everyone stays home and cooks. I mostly leave the neighborhood to eat out, there are so many interesting and delicious restaurants in Seattle, and not all of them are expensive. It would be GREAT if 45th Street, from Stoneway to the freeway, had eateries and bars that would bring people here, rather than me having to leave the neighborhood to find something worth the money. Whale Wins is an example of how popular a good quality restaurant can be, Musashi’s is also a good example. Why do we have 5 noodle houses, a Japanese and two Thai restaurants within 6 blocks of each other? We could use some diversity, and don’t start posting about Nicolas, the food is horrendous. When I drive by Murphy’s I rarely want to stop for a drink or a beer, it’s noisy and the service is poor, and their food in unmentionable. It would be nice if people opening restaurants in this neighborhood would ask the neighborhood what it wants…..
I’m psyched about the nail salon!! Night Lite is always waaaaaay too busy.
Patty’s was not good — won’t miss that place at all. I agree with GMGd re: lack of great/interesting/different restaurants in the hood. Happily, I’ve been to Russels a couple times recently (Stone and 41st) and it is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood! Small, but great bar, and delicious (thoughtfully limited) menu, super friendly owner (Joe). However, it is not for kids.
CONS-Patty’s Egg Nest, Nikolas, and a NAIL SALON.geesh. I was hoping for a really good restaurant. Not Thai, we have plenty of them!
SAD-HATE to see Morgan’s leave. AND Rodda Paint.
WANT-a good restaurant
WISH-NO CVS, ever. I really hope this will be the one that fails.
No parking and horrible traffic drive out many of the businesses that leave or never come to Wallingford.

Landlords might have a lot to do with what we get. The occasional business that owns its own location is in a whole different situation.
This is a response to wooly.. I cannot seem to wander the lane of password change to post.. the Sea Monster brings a very different type of patron. Please visit them and learn about their style… it is one thing to be new and begin to slam places with no regard to their history or background. It is another to do research.. and as a newcomer begin more slowly.
As for Babalu becoming another dance club, that’s all about the landlord. Babalu wanted more live music but the LL didn’t. I don’t think she’s down with another nightclub. Hence we get a nail salon – which there really aren’t that many nail salons in the neighborhood. Tanning salons, yes, but I can only think of 1 other nail salon.
Babalu’s new sign says it’s a bar, not a nail salon.
That wonderbar sign is a leftover from from a previous tenant – I think. I vaguely remember a place before Babalu.
Bring on the nail salon! The other nail place is always so crowded, it gives me anxiety to go there.
That would make sense. The sign seemed pretty worn.
I think this is that same site that has gone through being several different restaurants in pretty quick succession after Salena’s closed. All of the places lacked ambiance to us. I think the location is quite good but we don’t eat at places where we don’t like the ambiance or there is just simply no ambiance to speak of. Food is very important but restaurants ignore ambiance at their own peril.
what is Salud Bistro?
I wondered the same thing, but I believe it’s an editorial ambiguity. If I’m right, less ambiguous as “will re-open as Salud Bistro, under the same ownership” But admittedly the following comment about ownership structure conflicts with my interpretation. Maybe it’s really “under partly the same ownership.” Complicated ownership structure makes for complicated semantics.
Not surprised about the EggNest. We gave it more than one shot and food was unremarkable, service poor. They were woefully understaffed. Still hoping someone will open a truly good breakfast place.
Huh — I thought I was the only one who had a bad experience at Patty’s Eggnest.
There were a lot of positive things posted on Wallyhood when it opened (particular re: the pancakes), and on Yelp.
I never went back after trying the Eggnest (worst corned beef hash *ever*), and returned to Julia’s, which I’ve been very happy with for (egads) over 30 years.
There’s a lot to be said for consistency.
If this place is so big, why not a grocery store.?
In general, Patty’s Eggnest as a restaurant is good. After trying the Wallingford store a few times, it obviously wasn’t not up to par with it’s affiliate stores. Patty’s clientele is generally not local which requires parking, and in Wallingford cars & parking are a sin.
Steve
I don’t understand the gripes about parking. I’ve never had a problem finding parking in Wallingford, especially during the daytime.
My understanding was that Babalu’s landlord was the guy who ran it’s mother, and he wasn’t paying the rent. Recall that it was mostly open on weekends and the wine selection was lousy (and expensive). Haven’t seen the guy’s Rolls around so maybe he moved.
She had it for sale (asking price seemed pretty sporty as I recall) – did it ever sell?
And Pattys Eggnest seemed OK to me (1 visit); their closing will potentially be good for Nicolas (sp?), which seems to be mostly empty most of the time and is down to 6 hours a day. Looks like someones hobby.
I like Patty’s, it was pretty good. I always found the service good, but the prices high. $50 for 3 made me skip it in favor of Irwin’s or just going to QFC more than once. Blue Star still fills that awesome breakfast niche though.
despite it’s unfortunate name and somewhat surly and elitist staff, the Burgundian in Tangletown has really tasty breakfasts…
There are a few good “date night” restaurants in the neighborhood, and on the outskirts. I’m thinking of Tilth, which people seem to like a lot, Kisaku, mkt, Cantinetta, and Revel. Also, Westward. And there’s a place called Eva’s. I’ve been to Kisaku, mkt, and Cantinetta, and got a glass of wine once at Eva’s, and liked them all. My husband and I enjoyed Elemental, but it closed, unfortunately. Haven’t been to Tilth, Revel, or Westward, but have heard pretty good things. I’d love to hear about others, if they’re out there.
I didn’t care a lot for Patty’s EggNest. It would be great to have a good breakfast spot, like the Jitterbug was. That said, Blue Star and the Burgundian both look like good choices ….
