Back in May, Kimberly posted a note here that FamilyWorks was seeking volunteer tutors to help kids with reading. Sad to report that they did not get any volunteers, so we’re reposting the cause. Reading: it’s what you’re doing right now.
Reading Buddies Program
FamilyWorks is currently seeking volunteer tutors for our summer Reading Buddies program in collaboration with the Wallingford Boys and Girls Club.
What: This program connects volunteers with 6-12 year olds twice a week to read and do literacy activities together. Our goal is to support and encourage the love of reading and to help students retain reading comprehension skills over the summer vacation.
When: Reading Buddies will run Tuesdays & Thursdays from July 1 through August 14. Volunteers should plan to arrive between3:30-3:45 to set up, meet with their buddies from 4 to 5 p.m. and clean up afterwards until 5:15.
Requirements: We encourage volunteers to commit to coming for the entire program, but we are flexible particularly since people take vacations during the summer. There will be a required volunteer orientation in June. All orientations will be at FamilyWorks, 1501 N 45th St. You must be at least 15 years old, enjoy spending time with children ages 6-12, be able to come regularly throughout the program, and enjoy reading. You can call/e-mail if unable to attend a session.
How many people needed? We would love 20 people for this program.
