I thought I’d take a break from overseeing the busy Wallyhood newsroom to draw back the curtains on how Wallyhood gets made.
Firstly: this isn’t anybody’s day job. I (Jordan, aka Wallyhood) run a software company (we make event apps), and the other folks who contribute (Kimberly, Barb, Victoria, and others) have their own gigs. Most stories you read were typed sometime the previous evening, after my son Zev (no longer Baby Z) went to sleep.
So where do the story ideas and information come from? Mostly from you, the readers. Almost everything you read here starts with someone like you writing in and letting me know about something happening in the neighborhood. Why do Julie Cascioppo shows at the Good Shepherd Center often get a mention, and the dozens of others shows going on there in any given month not? Because Julie emails me and tells me about her shows, and provides yummy graphics and details that make writing a story about it easier!
So, let’s say you see something going on in the neighborhood. You think to yourself “I wonder why Wallyhood hasn’t covered this?” The answer could be that I am intentionally ignoring it just to spite you, but more likely, I’m just ignorant.
Want to help? Feed Wallyhood information! Send stories! The more details, the better. My dream for this blog would be to have every story written completely by someone who lives in the neighborhood. Neighbors sharing stories with neighbors.
Thinking you maybe want to exercise your writing muscles? I’ve got a backlog of stories that need some investigation. For example:
- Madison Market is supposedly opening a store on Stone Way.
- The old Sutra and Sugar Salon buildings are going to be torn down, replaced by new buildings. Permits have been filed. Curious what’s going to go up there?
- The Guild 45th may be torn down and replaced by a larger theater. What, really?!
- What’s happening with the burned out husk of Kitaro?
- Emerald City Athletic opened a gym at Stone Way and 40th. Never covered it.
- Ethan Stowell’s MKT opened in Tangletown. Any good?
And lots more! Why don’t you email me ([email protected]) and let me know what you’re interested in writing about. It’s easy! You make a couple phone calls, you take some notes, you share what you’ve learned.
Wallyhood has a large and dedicated readership: over 14,000 unique visitors per month, 80,000 – 110,000 pageviews per month and over 1,600 people get the daily email. Think of the glory that could be yours!
I think you mean Metropolitan Market. (Got nothing for articles, but happy to proof read.)
I was hoping he meant Metropolitan Market but I’m guessing it really is Madison Market. Sigh.
I hope it’s Madison Market. The store on Capitol Hill is great!
It isn’t Madison Market (a.k.a. Central Co-op, they appear to have dropped the Madison Market name.) It would be stark insanity for them, anyway, to open a second store 5 blocks from PCC.
That logic doesn’t seem to deter CVS and Walgreens, unfortunately.
I’ve been to Mkt three or four times. I think it’s great!
Lauren: Three or four times? You’re an expert! Want to write a review we can publish?
I’m not a very good writer but I could. I’m friends with the owner, will that matter?
