Waste Management’s Think Green Recycling Challenge is back for a third and final year. The Challenge runs from October 2013 – March 2014. Once again the Wallingford Community Council (WCC) is sponsoring the effort in the Friday North route (Friday being the day that Waste Management (WM) picks up our garbage and recycling, and we are in North Seattle).
The rules for the Challenge have changed this year, giving the WCC a variety of ways to earn money for local non-profits. At the end of the six month Challenge in March 2014, $25,000 will be awarded to to the one WM route that reduces its garbage the most, per household, compared to last year.
Another $25,000 will be awarded to the routes that participate in outreach activities. Of this outreach pot of money, $2,000 will be awarded each month to the route that participates in the most outreach activities. At the end of the contest period, the remaining $13,000 will be divided among all routes that took part in at least one activity.
The results from October are in, and Friday North is doing great! We participated in five outreach activities during the month of October which earned the WCC $2,000 which will be awarded to local non-profits after the end of the Challenge. Plus Friday North is in first place in reducing pounds of garbage per household. Whatever you are doing, keep it up!
Too bad we commercial pickups can’t participate (Thurs recycle, Friday yard waste)
Where do we petition for weekly recycle pickup in Wallingford? My household generates a recycle-to-trash ratio of at least 3-1.
No one in the city gets weekly recycling pick up.

SPU has no interest in increasing recycling pickup to weekly. Recyclable items don’t rot or smell bad, and you get them picked up for free, so you can leave out as much as you like every two weeks. You just need to make your recycling as compact as possible.
On the other hand, if everyone sorted their waste to take full advantage of recycling and food waste, we all could get by with every other week pickup of garbage. The only types of waste I can think of that make every other week garbage pickup difficult for certain households are disposable diapers and pet waste.
