Ruth from the Freeway Estates Community Orchard (FECO) let us know that fungi fun will be mushrooming at FECO this weekend when mushroom coaches help future backyard mycologists (that’s you!) learn about the art of mushroom growing.
Sound Transit recently removed two beautiful Scarlet Oak trees near Roosevelt High School in order to make way for light rail. Rather than let that wood go to waste (and since oak is perfect for growing several different varieties of edible mushrooms), FECO teamed up with Roosevelt Neighborhood Association volunteers to salvage the logs and convert them into mushroom logs.
These logs will be available for adoption: you can either inoculate the logs with mycelium spawn yourself or pay for the “full service” treatment (in which volunteers do the dirty work for you). Then drag the log back home and start rearing some fine gourmet mushrooms in your own backyard. There will also be a limited number of free oyster mushroom growing kits for children.
If you volunteer to help at the event, you get a mushroom log for free! Please email [email protected] for details.
Here’s the nitty gritty:
Date: Sunday, November 17th
Location: Freeway Estates Community Orchard (6th Ave NE, just north of NE 60th St)
Time: 1-2 pm for Roosie coupon holders, 2-4 pm for all others.
Please bring a cordless drill, a 12mm drill bit, toothbrush and gloves.
We will ask for a moderate cash donation to recover our costs. The amount will vary depending on which option you choose:
- pick up a log and take it home,
- do your own inoculation on-site, or
- have a mushroom coach inoculate a log for you.
If you can’t get enough of this gritty little urban orchard, you can also attend their Friday night Public Design Review Event:
Friday, November 15
7:00 -9:00pm
at the Hearthstone Retirement Facility (6720 E Green Lake Way N)It’s been a busy year!
Come to see the result of a merger of ideas from two public meetings, hard work by the architectural/permaculture team (197 hours), our orchard volunteers and public meeting attendees (1,030 hours – design grant work only!) and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) 10 hours. All are welcome to say yea or nay!
Light refreshment served.
Come by the orchard anytime to see what is already in process. The orchard is on 6th Ave NE, just north of NE 60th St. http://freewayestates.org/
