Seattle Police Department recently launched @Getyourbikeback, a Twitter feed for their inventory of over 500 bicycles in their Evidence Warehouse.
Why does the SPD have so many bikes? According to the SPD Blotter, “Each one of those bikes was abandoned somewhere in the city then later recovered by officers. We may have your bike, and we’d like to reunite you with your wheels.”
The Blotter points out that most folks don’t report their stolen bikes because they don’t know the serial number. “You don’t absolutely need a serial number to get your bike back, but it does expedite the process,” says Found Property Detective Michael Whidbey.
Here’s how it works: if you’re missing a bike, check the @Getyourbikeback Twitter feed. If you see a bike description matching yours, let SPD know by calling (206) 625-5011 or emailing them at [email protected]. If you can prove it’s yours with a serial number, receipt of purchase, photo of the bike or a photo of you on your bike, then you’re golden.
